The first segment in our three part series on the intersection of Science and Human Rights, follows the journey of Yan, a Czechoslovakian refugee, who escapes potential human rights violations and eventually arrives to the United States.  Once here, he starts his own business, pays taxes and ends up fascinated by medical mushrooms.  Unable to access the vast ocean of scientific research and knowledge, he resorts to experimenting on himself.  This leads to the question, is access to knowledge, a fundamental human right?
