a rima é complemento desnecessária ao bom poema e ao verso capaz e, enquanto ornamento, dispensável, especialmente nas obras mais longas, invenção afinal de uma idade bárbara, a fim de compensar argumentos pobres e métrica aleijada; agraciada desde então por um punhado de poetas modernos afamados, entusiasmados pela tradição, mas muito para sua própria vergonha, embaraço e constrangimento, impossibilitados de dizer as coisas de outra maneira, mais eficaz e ricamente expressiva. Não é sem razão, pois, que alguns poetas italianos ou portugueses de excepção a tenham rejeitado, em obras longas e breves, como de há muito também as nossas tragédias, coisa trivial que é e musicalmente sensaborona para ouvidos judiciosos; as quais consistem apenas em ritmo apropriado, adequada quantidade silábica e um sentido que é diversamente transportado de um verso para  outro, não por meio de tinidos de terminações semelhantes, erro evitado por antigos bem experimentados tanto na poesia como na boa oratória. Este negligenciar da rima tampouco deve ser entendido como defeito, embora o pareça eventualmente junto de filhos da puta dos menores, mas antes como exemplo, o primeiro, da liberdade devolvida ao poema da penosa escravidão moderna dos versejos.
