Summary:
The second piece is the continuation story from the first piece.
This second piece is from the guy’s point of view, on how he perceive the girl, and how he feel. 
The girl is someone that he love since his childhood. He make a promise to her in his childhood, to bring her away from her living environment that she is living in, as her living conditions is and very dark. The girl was force to live in the shadows, and darkness ever since she was born, and the guy wanted to bring her away from the place that she live in.  However, due to some circumstances, he broke the promise, and broke the little hope that she had within her. 
This makes her sees the world as harsh, cold, and unfair.  So, she decide that she don’t want to become like that; she doesn’t want to depend on anyone anymore. She want to become someone that people cannot touch, and she wanted to become someone that can fight for herself. She didn’t want to feel weak and powerless anymore. 
Hence, when the guy finally found the girl 10 years ago, she had change, from someone that is weak, to a warrior. 
Despite the changes, her attitude still remains ever since her childhood, a stubborn and fearless girl that is never really afraid of anything. 
As for the guy, he feels very guilty for letting the girl down. From the first chapter, the guy is perceive as someone who knows everything. Hence, the guy knew that the girl would hate him, and he wants to atone for his broken promise, and wants to show her that maybe life isn’t as cold and harsh as it seems. 


How I deliver my ideas is also through the lyrics, whereby the verse talks about the girl, and the pre chorus and chorus talks about how the guy feels. The piece is inspired from a Chinese novel that I’ve been recently reading Hence, in order to keep some elements of the origins of the story, I decided on a Chinese melody. As the story takes place in the ancient period, to become stronger and being powerful in the era, one needs to have a strong martial arts background.  Hence, the Chinese melody is there to also tell a story. This is also what makes my piece different, an English song, with Chinese melody.

PROW- Chapter 2

Summary:
This piece is a complicated relationship between a couple, where the guy is chasing the girl, and the girl rejects him time and again, despite liking him. One of the reasons is because the guy is a prince of a kingdom while the girl is merely a low rank commoner. Hence, for a prince to forgo his identity, his dignity, to chase a commoner, is something the girl find suspicious. 
As she’s from a different kingdom, and she’s trying to find her way back to her mother, before she dies. As the girl left her mother 10 years ago, to get stronger, she needs to go back to her mother; her only family, to show her mother that she is strong now to let her go in peace. However, in that era, many kingdoms are at war, to capture more land, to gain more power, to become invincible. That is another reason why she didn’t accept his love.  She didn’t want him to risk his life for her. The road back to her kingdom is perilous, having a high chance to die along the way. Hence, she is afraid that if one of them were to die, their love would be over. “Why start a love if it won’t last long? Why risk the pain of a broken heart? And even if both of them were to live in the end, how are the both of them going to end up? They both have different fates in life, and why stop for a passer-by?The guy is willing to leave his kingdom and use his life to protect her and is willing to follow her live a basic life on their way to the kingdom.The guy knows that nothing is going to stop her from leaving, so instead of stopping her, he willingly sets her free to chase her goals, and help her so she can get to her kingdom faster. 
Differentiation factor:
What is different is that the piece isn’t talking about the normal complicated relationship between couples. This piece talks about a selfless love, and a choosing between your love or your family kind of love. Adding in other factors that hinders the relationships, such as environmental factors for example and these factors make it hard for a couple that likes each other to be together, as there is too many obstructions and setbacks. 
Delivery:
As the focus is still their relationship, and not the other factor outside, hence for this piece, I wanted it to be not too heavy, but more gentle and flowly, hence there isn’t much percussion.As this isn’t a normal relationship,I use some unusual instruments in the song, like the harp and the marimba, and some synthesizer sounds as some of the counter melodies of the song. I use the strings as I felt that it would suit the song more if the piano is added.

PROW- Chapter 3

Summary:
The guy and the girl travel as fast as they could to the girl’s kingdom. However, with the war ongoing, it has already taken up some of their time. As the guy and the girl is passing through the borders towards the girl’s kingdom, they saw a small neighbouring state, that lost the war. The amount of dead bodies, littered the entire road, with arrows sticking out from their chests. The blood that flow out of the bodies is enough to fill a river. Some of the bodies are lacking body parts, and some of the bodies are filled with cuts made by the swords from the enemies. There are also many bodies that comes from the citizens that failed to escape the border, or even find a place to hide when the enemies broke down the gates. The wounded citizens are unable to find any medicine to stop their wounds from bleeding, which lead to the skin from corroding. The children and their mothers can be found weeping and crying for their dead husbands and fathers, as they search through the bodies, hoping to find any remains, and clinching on to the little hope that their love ones are alive, just wounded. The smell of blood can literally be tasted as they walk by.
Seeing the devastating scene in front of them, the girl and the guy decide that they must do something to end the war, to prevent more innocent people from dying.  

Differentiation factor:
The are different sections in the piece, whereby each section is talking about different things. There are 3 tempo change in this piece, and each tempo change signifies different section. The first section talks about the intense journey the guy and the girl face. The second section talks about the feeling they felt when they saw the dead bodies. Lastly, the last section talks about their decisions to aid in ending the war, swiftly and abruptly. 
And as no one in this generation has ever experienced what is it to see so much bodies and blood, as none of us experience the horror of war,(hopefully we’ll never experience it). Hence base on the many dramas and movies, I tried to imagine what is it like to see the mess of bodies and missing body parts, and walking around with blood on our shoes. I feel that it would be quite a scary and sad thing to feel, to see so much death in just a step you walk. 

Delivery Factor:
 The use of sound effects to emphasis on what I wanted, like the atmospheric sounds, to feel more realistic. The hose galloping sound and the swords un sheathing to signify the war occurs in the ancient times.
The ending, which ended swiftly, with the explosions suggest the next move that both the guy and the girl would be making, which will be big, and earth shaking, and unexpectedly.

PROW- Chapter 4

Summary:
This piece is about the journey both the guy and the girl take, to end the war.  The war is no longer about who’s becoming more powerful, but about ending the war, using the least amount of fighting, and most amount of scheming and wits, to win.  As the Chinese saying, “冰冻三尺,非一日之寒,成大事者不拘小节”.   This means that to be successful, one must not rush into things. It takes detailed planning, and time. Even the smallest change could result in the downfall of a kingdom. Hence, that was what both the guy and the girl did. By using the least amount of people, least amount of armies, and using the arts of “mind reading” to get to know the enemies, finding out their weakness, and using their weakness against them, everything was in their control. With their careful planning, they manage to overturn the outcome, and finally defeat their enemies, and sign a treaty to never engage in war again. 


Differentiation factor:
When thinking of war music, and searching about war music, the many things that came out will be epic, aggressive, and very orchestral, with lots of different instruments, to create a full blown war. However, in my piece, despite being about a full blown war, it dosen’t contain the orchestral music found online. This is because, despite the ongoing war, it now revolves around both the guy and the girl, and the rest of the kingdoms. The guy and the girl never follows the typical rule of war, whereby armies is dispatch and both sides fight until there’s a winner. What they did instead, was detail planning, and “playing” mind games with the different rulers of the kingdom. They attack the ruler’s psychologically, and make the rulers think exactly what both the guy and girl wants. Hence by using the weakness of the enemy, they successfully manage to defeat the other kingdom’s and win the war. Because of the usage of less armies and more thinking, hence there’s only 2 instruments that was playing, and the rest being sound effects.


Delivery factor:
The beginning is softer, to get the calm before the storm vibe, and the slowly planning for everything to fall in place.
The instrumental gets louder and louder to emphasis on the war, that’s still ongoing, and the plans slowly being put to motion.
I use sound effects to create the chaotic vibe in the middle of the song, where the war has reach it’s peak, where everything has fallen into place. 
The end slowly soften, to signify that the war is over, and that both the guy and the girl finally won. It’s short as there is still much more after effects of the war, but currently everyone is relief that the war is finally over, after a long endless battle.

PROW- Chapter 5

Summary:
This piece is about the after effects of war, specifically on the amount of deaths that happen in the war. After the war ended, despite trying hard to reduce the amount of deaths, it still can’t be avoided. In addition, as the girl decide to prolong her journey back to her kingdom, she ended up too losing her mother. Hence, in this piece, it is about the pain of losing someone, the emotions that one have to undergo, knowing that the love your your life, your family is gone, in a flash, and there is no way they are ever going to come back. But the memories of them will always remain in their hearts, and despite missing them, and maybe looking back at the memories will make someone feel upset, but knowing that they are at peace in the afterlife, you also will feel a sense of comfort. 

Differentiation factor:
Usually the after effects of war is very depressing and very tough. Sufferings can be seen everywhere, as houses are destroyed, and families are torn apart. Poverty spread throughout the kingdom, and diseases too start to sweep across the kingdoms, increasing the amount of deaths and injured.  However, for my piece, it’s a mixture of sadness and happiness. Although the after effects of war is usually tough, and many people would be mourning for the deaths of their families, in a sense they are also celebrating it. Celebrating because their loved ones do not have to suffer in the chaotic world with them. It is a form of freedom for the deads, and to the families, it gives them a comfort knowing that their loved ones do not have to suffer with them. Also, 
Hence I think what is different is that there isn’t happiness in the after effects of war, only sadness and pain. However, for my piece, it is sad, but also happy at the same time. 

Delivery: 
The beginning is sad, and the melody is played using the violin, to give off the sad vibe. 
The ending is happier, and the melody is played using the vibraphone, to enhance the change in the mood. 
The middle part is a mixture of sad and happy, using the cello and the piano, to emphasis on the contradiction of mindset, whereby they are upset that their loved ones are gone, but also happy that their loved ones are gone.

PROW - Chapter 6

Summary:
It was a few years after the war ended.  The new rulers of the kingdom vowed to live to serve the people, to prevent any war from happening again. Throughout the few years, new rules were implemented, to ensure the safety, and the equality of the people in the kingdom.The people in the kingdoms live happily, and contented, knowing that their new rulers are kind hearted and not power crazy. 

Both the guy and the girl finally got together, becoming husband and wife, after the girl realised that life is too short to have regrets. After the death that she had seen, and after seeing how sudden families could be broken in a flash, she decide to finally give in to her heart. All her life, she is always chasing something that’s far away, and never settling for what’s in front of her.  Because of that, she almost bring death upon herself and the love of her life. The guy, after years of searching, and years of never giving up on her, finally got his wish; to have the girl in his arms, by his side. 


Differentiation factor:
A wedding is one of the happiest day of many people’s life, and one of many people’s dreams; to marry the love of your life and be with them regardless of sickness or health, until death do them apart. Naturally, a wedding song should be happy. However, I wanted to create a wedding song that’s in a minor key, to symbolise their past, which is fill with pain and hardships. It also symbolise them reminiscing their memories, and how much they have been through to get to where they are today. It’s different because the wedding music is depressing instead of happy. 

Delivery:
The use of the organ at the beginning, and the bell-like melody to give it more of a wedding vibe.
The ending is happy, to show that its a happy ending.
The rain in the background to give some atmospheric vibe.

Rui Yun is a Singapore based songwriter, specialising in Chinese music. She hopes to form a connection with her listeners through her music with the inspiration of stories she has been exposed to since young. She started playing the Yangqin, a traditional Chinese instrument, at the age of 13, which piqued her interest in writing Chinese songs and further enrolled into the Diploma in Music and Audio Technology (DMAT) at Singapore Polytechnic.  Ranging from traditional Chinese to modern Mandopop, Rui Yun enjoys the concept of fusing both styles as it embraces the Chinese culture of the past and present and brings the potential in the combination of traditional and modern instruments to bring new perspectives in this musical art form.  When it comes to her lyric writing style, she believes that “behind every favourite song, is an untold story” and is keen to share more interesting songs to her listeners.
