Suits of armor, and the warriors who wore them, have fueled the human imagination since they first appeared in the ancient world. "The Age of Armor: Treasures from the Higgins Armory Collection at the Worcester Art Museum," explores how these compelling exoskeletons have been used in various forms around the globe, from antiquity to modern times. The Worcester Art Museum’s Higgins Armory Collection is the one of the largest collections of arms and armor in the United States.

"The Age of Armor: Treasures from the Higgins Armory Collection at the Worcester Art Museum" was organized by the Worcester Art Museum and was sponsored locally by presenting sponsors Susan and Tom Palmer and Taylor Cadillac, as well as Exhibition Program sponsor ProMedica, with additional support from the McLoughlin Family Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council.

Enjoy these verbal descriptions of selected works from the Toledo Museum of Art's American art gallery reinstallation: "Expanding Horizons."

Painted in 1908 by American painter Frederic Remington, Indians Simulating Buffalo is a rectangular oil on canvas painting that hangs horizontally 27 by 40 inches.

Along the top fourth of the painting, a light cornflower blue sky is visible above faded yellow, flat-topped mountains in a landscape of the western United States. Below in the bottom 3/4 of the painting is a vast, flat, plain of orangey-yellow grass. Two figures representing  Indigenous people, each wearing two feathers in their black hair, are sitting on grazing brown and white horses that stand next to each other. The riders are bent over their horses with bison skins over their backs and the backs of the horses. Their heads are turned to face one another.

The closer of the two figures is centered in the painting. Completely in profile facing the left side of the painting, their horse spans about 1/3 of the painting’s width. The combined height of rider and horse is about half of the painting. The second figure is to the left of the first, slightly farther back. From head to tail, their horse is about 1/4 of the painting’s width. On the right side of the painting, a little more than hallway from the top, below the line of mountains, a distant procession of covered wagons and people on horseback travels to the left.
