MUS307 final project. I created an arpeggiator in Max/MSP and fed the output into UVic's vintage 1970's Buchla synthesizer. All sounds were generated by the Buchla aside from my throat singing. Mixed in Reaper

If Ever I'll Be There

MUS 307 Musique Concrète project. Sounds were recorded by the class with Dr. Andrew Schloss, composed and mixed using Audacity because I wanted to limit myself to a more simplistic software. 
Human experimentation was a theme that arose in my mind during the composition, and for me the track takes on a storyline of captives being held and experimented on, and their eventual uprising and escape.

Message to Our Mother:


You rumble from your core, desperate to shake off this heat.

We categorize things like fire, water, air, and earth, but I swear I see a fire stirring the ocean, and a hurricane barreling in your waves.

And the mountains, they sprout from the magma thousands of miles beneath our feet, a revolution worth over millions of years.

And when the mountains have aged, you grace them with green, just like you grace us with the beauty of wrinkles on our skin. 

The wolves, they are howling, heads tilted, backs arched. They map each and every corner - tracing the ancient borders of your spine.

Most of us, we see a city or a town, but let me tell you, all I can see is black dark air drifting to your skies, sludged oil seeping into the salmon riverbeds, and "our homes" being built from the flaps beneath your skin. 

It's like we keep digging our greedy nails into your opens wounds thinking we can find something more. This comes easy for us, since the only thing mankind has ever known is how to own something. 

It's like your pain has been ingrained on the inside of my skull like a tattoo branded on my forehead. It's like we are a surgeon holding a scalple in a our hand saying there's nothing more that we can do, leaving the patient wide open on the table. 

I don't blame your for shaking off this heat.

But let me tell you, I'll never stop running your borders with the wolves, howling until someone hears me.

Sometimes, you just want to throw all your crazy ideas into one track and hope it turns out.

Some features of this track include: a prominent use of 3-bar phrases instead of 4-bar; harmony built almost entirely on the Persian scale; my live-performance of the doumbek (a turkish hand drum); sound design made by my mouth; beatboxing; my own throat singing; noise-vocoded lyrics; Armenian rhythms and harmonies influenced by System of a Down; sections influenced by extreme metal band Meshuggah;

I wanted to build a track mostly from the ground up, designing drum and synth sounds myself, performing some of the parts and instruments live, write lyrics that were relevant to me and my current life situation, and use a selection of the many unusual musical influences I have internalized over the years. What came out makes for an interesting track that breaks expectations! It brings me some satisfaction to make new the things that I find interesting and bring it together into something of my own. I want to make music that stimulates me personally and look back on it knowing I did what I wanted. All that said, I'm glad Surrender came together in the way that it did with as many musical quirks as it features.

Hope you like this dark track, even better if you headbang to it.
