Infamy: Tales from Pearl Harbor

Waimanalo Beach is a haven for O'ahu's locals today--a spot where they can go to get away from the crowds. It's not too busy, but it still sees action. On December 7, 1941, as Pearl Harbor was attacked from above, a group of men set out to attack it from below as well. Two of these men found themselves at Waimanalo later that evening, totally by accident. And for one of them, it's where they reached their limit.

S2E9 - Internment

I hadn't planned to write this episode. On the contrary, I had been hoping to use this week as an opportunity to close up the season and be on my way to telling the stories of the Civil Rights Movement in season three. But toward the end of my research last week, I came across an anecdote that left me so thoroughly shocked that I haven't been able to get it off my mind ever since. I can't let these details be omitted, so we’re going back to the camps this week for Internment (Part 2).

S2E10 - Internment (Part 2)

In April of 2015, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced a lofty new plan. 73 years after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the agency would return to the scene of the disaster and perform a duty that, for multiple reasons, wouldn’t have been possible in 1941. With the help of both historical records and modern technology, the agency set out to attach a name to the remains of the 388 victims of the USS Oklahoma who were left unidentified following the aftermath of that fateful day. Of the 429 men killed aboard the Oklahoma that morning, only 35 were ever fully identified in the years that followed. The rest, the hundreds of men who were lost when their ship suddenly capsized, were buried on O’ahu inside plain, wooden coffins in mass graves with headstones marked “Unknown.”
And now, a full 75 years after their final chapter ended, their story is receiving its epilogue.

OS E2 - Before the Bard

Beaver Island lies about 32 miles off the coast of Michigan, smack dab in the middle of the two peninsulas. Its population of 657 people have a total of eight restaurants to choose from, but that’s really only during the summer. It’s the type of place that largely shuts down when the tourists don’t want to come visit. It’s a quiet, peaceful island, wholly unremarkable as a vacation destination today. But for six whole years in the 1850s, the island and its people, they had themselves a king.
