Ahead of the release his powerful debut album for @Metalheadz in December, Welsh drum & bass wizard @quartz serves up 70 minutes of unreleased material from himself and peers for the Recognise mix series, and speaks to Ben Hindle about his meticulous artistic approach.

Recognise 093: Quartz

I've wanted to make this mix for almost 30 years; the tunes just didn't exist for it back then. Danny Breaks' "The Bear" blew my mind with its dark, electric jazz funk that fused Miles Davis with early Wu-Tang RZA. But in '96, it was sui generis, so it sat in my crate awaiting partners in crime.

In years since, I've tracked down other tunes with similar nocturnal menace. This isn't nostalgic "jazzy jungle" of keyboard presets and video games; it's shadows and criminals and blood-stained suits.

Some of the most exciting music in this vein is San's work for Rua Sound. The EPs are the closest thing I've heard to late '90s Source Direct, after they tipped headlong into darkness. SD-associated Odysee Recordings also carries on this spirit. Ornette Hawkins, with two tracks here, is the jazziest junglist out there; fellow AGN7 Audio artist Dacamera isn't far behind.

Fanu's criminally underrated collaboration with Bill Laswell gets one track here, but the whole album is worth hearing, full-on electric Miles worship. Speaking of which, the one tease here comes not from dnb, but from techno, Oliver Ho's mystical, millennial Miles invocation. Finally, the incomparable Sci-Clone presents two flip sides here - no anthems, just back alley vibes.

We open the show talking about some recent news. We get into No Nut November, some recent fight bookings and more.

About 32:25 in Rob Labiento joins us in studio. Rob is the owner of Long Island Strength & Performance. He was Stan the Mans strength coach once upon a time & worked with Menace for majority of his fight career. We talk some Dennis Bermudez Day, we talk about our friend Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Rob tried the new G Fuel RTD cans, we talk about Robs new baby and more.

Around 43:10 we call up Joey Beltran. We had a little confusion on the time so we interrupt some of Joey's training sessions but he is gracious enough to give us some time. We talk to Joey about his recent win in Bareknuckle Fighting, becoming the champ, we talk about working with the Mental Sensei Caleb Rogers, we talk about fighting on the same card recently as his lady, becoming the Police Gazette Diamond Heavyweight Champ, when we can expect to see him back in action, where you can find him if you want to train with him & much more.

We then talk to Rob Labiento some more for a few. We joke about some drinking stories, talk more about Dennis Bermudez Day and more.

Around 1:15:35 we call up Menace's friend Joey Albright. Joey is a retired Pro BMX racer and father to a Pro Motocross Rider. We talk some funny street fight stories, we talk about the BMX days, what that sport of Pro BMX is like, growing up in upstate NY, we talk about some injuries he has gotten riding over the years, supporting his sons Motocross career, talk some motocross, the science behind motocross, we talk about his buddy Dean who is Menace's older brother and much more.
