Serge Geyzel and Karsten Pflum are old friends, with a common musical ground and passion. Since 2020 they have been collaborating prolifically - focusing their energy and effort on dance-oriented electro, with strong acid, breakbeat, and IDM vibes.

“EP 2” is a five tracker, displaying a palette of funky, tight, deep, and quirky excursions into their acid galaxy.

“I don’t need no southbound highway sign to tell me HELL IS REAL”.

This opening line from the debut single “New Tongue” launches us into the sophomore album Glass Fate by the Chicago based Desert Liminal. Glass Fate takes us through a Lost Highway trip into the subconscious of Sarah Jane Quillin’s year while writing this record. The songs form a collective meditation on Quillin’s hope and grief while processing the loss of a parent, the end of a beloved band Heavy Dreams (a collaboration with DEHD’s Emily Kempf), and witnessing the surreal near-death experience of her best friend, Desert Liminal’s drummer Rob Logan, during one of their shows. Channeling this heaviness into soaring and simmering experimental indie rock, Desert Liminal’s sound is marked by Quillin’s spectral vocal melodies layered over warm, looping walls of vintage synthesizer and violin filtered through a distortion pedal array. Rob Logan’s drumming ranges from driving post-punk drum grooves to thoughtful, held back polyrhythms that serve and elevate the record.

Completing this subverted power trio, violinist and prolific noise artist Mallory Linehan (Chelsea Bridge) joined in 2019, perfecting the trio’s sound with spacious strings and tape loops that blend into the warm wash of resonating reverb and delay. A first listen of Glass Fate reveals a band with an astute ear for creating warm, engaging art-pop that entwines Quillin’s eliding delivery around smart hooks and introspective, bordering on melancholy, melodies. The further these songs move from the source they begin slipping into headier terrain creating neck-craning audio fields of droning violins and looped voice that recall Tony Conrad at his most accessible and Haley Fohr’s experimentations with voice and breath. These sounds cohabitate in the liminal space where meaning and reference slowly fade into Jungian archetype and back again through the trio’s strong grasp on solid, reality-affirming songwriting.

Ukrainian Field Notes VA is a fundraising compilation with a difference, music with a backstory that gives a first-hand account of the unfolding events since the full-scale Russian invasion in real time, and presents an overview of the changing face of the Ukrainian music scene dictated by blackouts and curfew restrictions.

What started off as an ongoing series of interviews with Ukrainian artists for the experimental music website A Closer Listen has now become a book comprising all 170 interviews conducted over the course of a year mapping out the electronic and experimental scene in Ukraine.

All musicians involved were asked to submit a track composed after February 24, 2022 to mark its publication. The resulting material reflects the diaristic nature of the book and deals with PTSD, displacement, separation, and loss, and shows at the same time the strength and resilience of Ukrainian artists with a meditative and uplifting reach.

The track listing follows the chronological order of the interviews, switching from ambient and electronic to classical and experimental in a seemingly random fashion, but war is chaotic and shattering, or as Serhii Zhadan writes in Sky Above Kharkiv, “War sharply changes ways of seeing, changes feelings.” Ukrainian Field Notes is a testament to the shifting sonic and human landscape.

Ukrainian Field Notes VA - це благодійна фандрайзінгова компіляція, що відрізняється від інших, музика з передісторією, яка розповідає з перших вуст про події, що розгортаються з моменту повномасштабного російського вторгнення в режимі реального часу, і представляє огляд зміни обличчя української музичної сцени, продиктованої відключенням електроенергії та обмеженнями комендантської години.

Те, що починалося як серія інтерв'ю з українськими музикантами для сайту експериментальної музики A Closer Listen, тепер перетворилося на книгу, що містить усі 170 інтерв'ю, взятих протягом року, які окреслюють електронну та експериментальну сцену в Україні.

Щоб відзначити її публікацію, всім музикантам, які брали участь в інтерв'ю, було запропоновано надіслати трек, написаний після 24 лютого 2022 року. Отриманий матеріал відображає щоденниковий характер книги і стосується ПТСР, переміщення, розлуки та втрати, а також демонструє силу та стійкість українських митців з медитативним та піднесеним звучанням.

Трек-лист відповідає хронологічному порядку інтерв'ю, переходячи від ембієнту та електроніки до класики та експериментальної музики у, здавалося б, випадковий спосіб, але війна є хаотичною та руйнівною, або, як пише Сергій Жадан у "Небі над Харковом", "війна різко змінює способи бачення, змінює почуття". "Ukrainian Field Notes VA" - це свідчення мінливого звукового та людського ландшафту.
