  At church yesterday, our pastor referenced the section in Paul's letter to the Philippians, chapter 2, verses 14 and 15, where he instructs members of this new church to "do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God, without blemish in the midst of a twisted and crooked generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world."
   It's true we still live among a twisted and crooked generation, and that they are still drawn to the occasional light in the world. Not everyone responds to the kind of approach I used in the song, "So Fired Up", with its loud in-your-face testimony, screaming the name of Jesus to the world. More often, people are drawn to the simple pleasantries in our personality, the peace in our demeanor, the kindnesses we show them, without grumbling and questioning. They see something in us that they desire for themselves. That's the basis for this song, "I Want What You've Got". 
   The recording here from Joe's basement studio, came out nice and clean, maybe a little too laid-back, (I was aiming for Al Green, but instead got Pat Boone - reminding me of that scene in Dreamgirls, where Eddie Murphy's character Jimmy Early records the song "Cadillac Car", but the producers sell it to a white pop group, Dave and the Sweethearts, who take all the life out of it.)  However, I did not want my song to be too edgy, because unfortunately the catch phrase can be misinterpreted as an inappropriate expression of greed or lust, exactly what I don't want to convey.

Temptation, frustration. We all deal with them. My prayer in this song is to be able to see others as He sees all of us, as His children.
This was my first time working in Phil's studio. As I did with Joe, I just brought in my song and my voice, and added a little bit of flute just to see how it would come out. Phil did the hard work, laying down a great acoustic guitar track, and adding the bass, programming the drums, then squeezing in some subtle keyboards in the second half of the song, and engineering the whole thing. I'm blessed to be able to collaborate with guys like Joe and Phil.
