Leaf In A Hurricane

I have more than 35 years’ experience as a musician and classically trained violinist since receiving her first violin at age 9. I quickly discovered that I could also play by ear and had a passion and unique ability to pick up a breadth of genres, including Jazz, Blues, R&B, Rock, Blue Grass, Folk and even Zydeco.

My love story with music started at a very young age. “One of my first memories is a photo of me at age 2, sitting at the piano and banging on the keys with a smile that stretched from ear to ear. My parents said that’s when they knew I had a special relationship with music – it was in my soul. They were right. Even as a little girl I remember spending most of my weekends hanging out in our family room, lying on the floor next to our stereo, listening to all types of music I could get my hands on: Gospel, Motown, R&B, folk, classical – all genres, styles, voices. I’d lay there on my stomach for hours – eyes closed, mind lost in the eclectic sounds of melodies and harmonies. It was in these treasured moments that I felt a sense of peace and happiness, an escape from trauma and abuse as a child that even my loving parents knew nothing about. Music wrote my story of survival and redemption.”

While violin will always be my first love, I taught myself acoustic guitar, which turned out to be a pivotal point in my musical career. “As much as I will always love being a violinist, learning to play guitar revitalized my growth in musicianship at a time when I was stuck, both musically and personally. Not only did it help me become a better violinist, but it also helped me discover my voice and has given me a much-needed outlet to express myself through some very difficult times in my life. I had pleasantly stumbled into a way to express my sadness, my joys and fears...and that’s the best therapy ever.”
