If you have spent time in southwest Missouri over the past 40 years, you’ve probably seen or visited the western store mecca PFI (Preferred Farmers Incorporated). Overlooking Hwy 65 in Springfield, the business was the place to shop for all things western, and their tagline “…and I’m not kidding” was a mainstay on TV commercials across the Ozarks. Former owner, Randy Little, sold PFI a few years ago, but he’s still engaged in the business community and Missouri’s agriculture industry.

Digging Into Commodity Conference (Part 2) with Faith Parum

In this week's Digging In, graduates of veterinary medicine toss their graduation cap in the air and head into their long sought-after career, many are choosing urban clinics who specialize in small animal care, over rural, mostly mixed animal practices.  In our rural, agriculture centered communities its necessary we have access to large animal veterinarians, but in some areas, the numbers are coming up short.  The University of Missouri School of Veterinary Medicine is working to address this challenge.  During the recent MOFB Commodity Conference we heard from Julie Braun, Executive Director of Missouri Veterinary Medical Association and Cliff Miller, DVM. They discussed the challenge and how the college is working to address concerns.

Harrison is the Director of the National Agricultural Law Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The center is the nation’s leading source of research and information related to agricultural and food law. Harrison is a frequent presenter on the farm bill, water law, and environmental law. This discussion focuses heavily on the MAHA movement and pesticides as two of the big legal issues for agriculture.

Dr. Ted Schroeder is a professor of agriculture economics with Kansas State University. He led the conversation on Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling (M-COOL). Some livestock producers strongly favor the concept while others favor a voluntary system. Dr. Schroeder worked to dial in the conversation to numbers and consumer research in their interest vs buying habits.

This year, MOFB President Garrett Hawkins attended the event, and sat down with Ed Elfmann, an ag policy expert with the American Bankers Association.
