Dangerous Women | Sleepwalking through the Assault on Democracy

In 1941 the Nazis began a genocidal process aimed at killing every Jewish man, woman and child in Europe. They called this the ‘Final Solution’. Six Killing Centres, also known as “Death Camps” or “Extermination Camps”, were created in German-occupied Poland. These Killing Centres were designed for mass murder of human beings as efficiently and quickly as possible in gas chambers or vans. Chelmno, was the first operational killing centre, opened in December 1941. The other five killing centres were  Belzec, Sobibor, Treblinka, Majdanek and Auschwitz. 

This podcast focuses on Belzec and its memorial, in conversation with Barbara Buntman, a scholar and a long-time volunteer at the JHGC. Barbara unpacks some facts about Belzec and also talks to us about her recent publication with the JHGC on the same topic.

The history of the persecution of Jewish people by the Vichy Colonial Regime in West Africa and specifically, in Senegal is an unfamiliar history to most people. Previously, we had a conversation with artist Joe Turpin, who created an amazing exhibition which documents this history. In this podcast we continue our focus on this history striving to shed more light and unpack its intricacies. JHGC in Conversation with Prof. Alioune Dème on Africa and the Holocaust

This is the story of Christine Niwemfura, born in 1985 in Gitarama, in Rwanda, and survived the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. This was a devastating genocide, where Hutu extremists targeted and attempted to destroy all Tutsi in Rwanda. In a period of 100 days, from April to July 1994, approximately 800 000 people, most of whom were Tutsi, were murdered. Christine Niwemfura was Tutsi and survived the genocide. This is her story of strength, resilience and survival.

The Story of Christine Niwemfura

This is the story of Kitty Schrott Drill. Born in Austria in 1934, and survived the Holocaust. Kitty and her family were some of the Jews who managed to escape Nazi persecution in Europe and flee to British Mandated Palestine, but were refused entry by the British government in 1940, and subsequently deported and detained on the island of Mauritius, until the end of the Holocaust in 1945. This is her story of survival.

JHGC in Conversation with Prof. Navras Aafreedi on Holocaust Education in India Part 1

In this episode we focus on the topic of toxic masculinity, and the idea of "dangerous men". Toxic masculinity is a concept often used to define unhealthy attributes associated with men and maleness. From being unemotional and power-hungry to narcissistic and violent, men are oftentimes defined by these stereotypes, which create an unhealthy and unrealistic understanding of what it means to be a man in society. 

The term toxic masculinity emerged in the early 1980's and 90’s, mainly as a result of what is referred to as the mythopoetic men's movement of that time, which was a body of self-help activities and therapeutic workshops and retreats for men undertaken by various organisations and authors in the United States. Masculinity and the study of men have become more and more important as focuses of academic, political and media inquiry. Some wonder if this is a backlash to feminism? Or is there something specific behind this interest?

Standing Up to the Assault on Democracy with Gabriela Bulisova & Mark Isaac

In this episode we engage in  a conversation with Dr Yaron Nir Freisager. Dr Nir Freisager is an author, educator at Branco Weiss high school in Kiryat Shmona in Israel, as well as a lecturer at the Tel-Hai Academic College; he is also a  history researcher specialized in Jewish ghettos’ writings in Poland during World War II, and a Research associate in the Institute for Contemporary Jewry, Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Dr Nir Freisager was in Johannesburg, hosted by the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre, as a visiting scholar chosen as the inaugural fellow of the annual JHGC/Hebrew university/Sylt Foundation fellowship in Holocaust & genocide studies. The Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre, the Hebrew university in Jerusalem and the Sylt foundation have partnered to create an annual fellowship in Holocaust and Genocide studies, where a chosen scholar or academic will spend 2-4 weeks here in South Africa conducting or furthering their research on various aspects of the Holocaust and Genocide studies. After a lengthy process of selection, we are pleased to announce that Dr Nir Freisager is the first scholar chosen for this prestigious annual fellowship. In this episode, Dr Nir Freisager talks  to us about his work, publication and his lecture and workshop he has conducted while in Johannesburg.

The German factor: Hutu-Tutsi Conflict and Genocide in Rwanda

An exploration of the complex relationship between Germany and Rwanda. Rwanda became part of Germany’s colonial empire and later on developed a strong and sustained relationship in the context of the Cold War. This lecture is based on an evaluation of the German foreign office archives on Rwanda and primarily focuses on the first waves of ethnic violence – and Germany’s reaction – or non-reaction to it. The aim is to explore what kind of impact the German foreign policy, especially with regards to development aid, had in the context of the development of the Rwandan crisis.

Jan Leidecker wrote his M.A. thesis in History at the Leibniz University of Hanover, Germany on the German Rwandan Relations in “First Republic“. In 2000 he was a legal Intern with the prosecution in the so called Media Trial at the UN ICTR and the War Crimes Unit of the Canadian Department of Justice. Since 2016 he is the Regional Representative of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation in Johannesburg
