"Time Goes Fly" is a title that evolved from my obsession with Psychedelic Rock and the concept of time. The word "fly" is used in the slang sense to describe something that is cool (super-fly), but can also be loosely related to the phrases "time flies" and "as time goes by". As with most of my songwriting, the starting point was the chord progression on guitar, where I used barre chords with the higher strings left open, to achieve an uplifting and celestial sound. At the time of writing the song's main riff, I was listening to the album Lonerism by Tame Impala and the influence of one particular song "Endors Toi" came through, with its spells of chromatic and dramatic chord changes and jumpy rhythms. I wrote and recorded all the parts for each instrument, the bass being the part I'm most proud of, and gained some mixing and mastering experience on this track with the help of others at college.

Time Goes Fly

"Clementine" channeled a new skill in my music making that I discovered through designing my own sounds and layering them to create my first functioning electronic track. The process began when I recorded the acoustic guitar riff with harmonics on my USB condenser microphone. I then recorded, edited and looped sounds from my mouth and within arms reach of my desk such as the sound of me opening a water bottle. A friend on my course played the expressive guitar melody I wrote. In the process, I learned new production skills on Logic such as pitch manipulation, the slow-down/speed-up tool and use of effects (Bitcrusher, LFO). When making this track, my main influence was Four Tet and his ecstatic electronic sound. The majority of the track was made from my desk at home, where I took advantage of the limited amount of equipment I had to create it.

Clementine

In the making of this track, I was eager to use a guitar riff that would become the main hook and was able to use one I had kept in my bottom drawer for quite some time. I was at a stage with my guitar playing where I experimented with Jazz/funk variations which included added 7ths and 9ths to chords as well as syncopated rhythms. Myself and three other musicians grouped together within the first month of college to co-write a track that was based on this riff/idea. Along with writing the chord progressions for each section of the song, the bassist, Oskar, played off of my ideas with exuberant and funky Bass-lines which would then be accompanied by simple and laid back 1/8 note grooves played by the drummer, Josh. Jorja, the vocalist, then wrote the melodies and lyrics with her distinctive jazz-influenced style of singing which topped off the song and showcased our collaborative abilities to the max. I enjoyed having the important role of laying down the foundations of this track so that the other musicians could work with my original ideas.
