It has often been discussed what Sandinista would have sounded like if it had been trimmed it down to a double. Whilst I am a fan of Sandinista as it is, I thought it was an interesting challenge so I set to work giving it a bit of editing. My first thought was it still has to have 6 songs per side so I knew 12 songs had to go. I instantly decided to do away with all of the dubs and alternate versions. This meant One More Dub, Mensforth Hill, Living In Fame, Silicone On Sapphire, Version Pardner and Living In Fame all got the snip. I then decided to omit anything the band never sang on, this meant losing Lose This Skin and Career Opportunities. This left me with four "proper" songs to lose. I chose Lightning Strikes, Look Here, The Crooked Beat and Junkie Slip to be the unlucky four. Lightning Strikes suffers from a dodgy Joe vocal imo, it's all spittle and slurred words, and a kind of inferior version of Mag 7. The Crooked Beat is good musically but Paul's singing isn't the greatest. Look Here could have survived the cut on another day but something had to go. I just don't like Junkie Slip so that was always going to get the heave-ho. I then decided to get rid of all of the stuff in between songs, the radio stuff, the kids singing, the bloke at the carnival etc, and just see how it sounded as a bunch of songs. I also gave the track listing a shake up as I thought the sequencing was a bit strange in places on the original album. I also edited down a few of the longer tracks, shortening some intros and outros, trying to give the album more flow. Some might say I'm ruining the "works of Jah" but I thought it was a worthwhile experiment, and it just shows what a great bunch of songs there is on the album amongst some of the undeniable indulgence. I've put it on Soundcloud as "four sides" as if it were vinyl. In total the album has been trimmed down from 144 minutes to 87 minutes.
