For as long as I can remember, I’ve felt there was something truly mysterious about this world, and always wanted to find out just what that is. I think I may have found out some of it, but I also think I’ve only just scratched the surface. That’s kind of what this album is about. Until recently it had always seemed to me as if everything around me was so out of context, nonsensical, random. Finally I am beginning to understand that everything is connected, and I’d really like to keep exploring that, so here is something in context.

Depuis toujours, j’ai senti qu’il y avait quelque chose de vraiment mystérieux à propos de ce monde, et j’ai toujours voulu découvrir ce que c’était. Je crois en avoir découvert une partie, mais je pense aussi que je n’ai fait qu’égratigner la surface. C’est un peu l’idée de cet album. Jusqu’à récemment, il m’a toujours semblé que tout autour de moi était hors de contexte, insensé, aléatoire. Finalement je commence à comprendre que tout est connecté, et je voudrais vraiment continuer à explorer tout ça, voici donc quelque chose dans son contexte.

British musician Jo Johnson’s debut solo album for Further Records, Weaving, betokens an exciting presence in the world of minimalist composition. 

“Ancestral Footsteps” opens the LP with cascades of cyclical harp-like sounds, an homage to one of Johnson’s primary inspirations: Alice Coltrane. Channelling rigorous new age and mesmerizing Riley-esque/Reichian minimalism, the piece accrues heft and intensity, with occasional bursts of synthetic, tribal clapping until it fades out with cinematic flourish. The title track gradually alters simple guitar and keyboard phrases, along with a chiming motif that multiplies in a hall of mirrors. The disorientating arpeggios form moiré patterns against colossal bass notes. The mood lightens considerably with “Words Came After Music,” whose sweeping strings and drones could take you to whatever your idea of heaven is. Interestingly, the title of the piece is inspired by an anthropological theory Johnson stumbled across that musical ability predates language in humans. With its sombre, undulating synths and lustrous highs and lows, “In the Shadow of The Workhouse” plumbs profound emotional depths. Epic closer “Silver Threads” starts as an almost silent retreat in the vein of Laurie Spiegel's Appalachian Grove or Eno and Budd's The Pearl with the faint hum and buzz of telegraph wires, until four minutes in a stoic pulse and suspenseful chiming motif arise, buttressed by glowing synth sighs and the LP's only percussive thumps (think Incunabula era Autechre). 

While inspired by the "serious music" of Arvo Pärt, Wim Mertens and others, Johnson’s mandalas of tone mantras offer a playful, DIY sense of adventure, as you might expect from the former guitarist for incendiary punk group Huggy Bear and a long-term co-organizer of London’s Bleep43 techno club night and label. Weaving condenses Johnson's long love affair with free jazz, minimalism and electronic music and this unique ambient composition is invested with powerful emotional resonance.

The material collated on this third release from Heavenly Music Corporation was composed specifically for St. Giga in Japan, a satellite broadcast radio station transmitting ethereal audio harmony 24 hours a day. What made this station otherworldly was its programming; motivated by tidal movements, the aquatic ebbs and flows of each day synchronised to the activity and intensity of the music broadcast.

Hanyo van Oosterom lived in the small cave of the Kallikatsou in the early eighties, finding inspiration there for the Chi project (1983-1986). From the nineties to 2006 he created drones, loops, samples and soundscapes, traveling numerous times annually back and forth to the Kallikatsou for fine-tuning. With the Original Recordings and Bamboo Recordings, both strongly connected to the Kallikatsou, creating the perfect timeframe, “the circle [is] closed. Together these recordings reflect and express the different aspects of the experience. A trilogy of random dream-catching over 30 years.”

Two years after the milestone SOMEWHERE compilations, Something Happening Somewhere is commemorating the times that have passed, returning with a new chapter in the series. Selecting unique pieces of artists known and less known, the SOMEWHERE series continue their sound based confessional. Telling unheard stories, exposing unseen surfaces and unheard sounds.

SOMEWHERE III is set to be released as two vinyl samplers, with a selection of the tracks featured in the full digital compilations, which will feature four extra digital only tracks. A host of familiar SoHaSo figures make an appearance, but there is also room for new faces like Aril Brikha, KAAP, Ripperton in his stunning collab with Love over Entropy, Equus, Tracey and Mulder. The whole effort is packaged in a beautiful artwork sleeve designed by ever talented designer Quentin Deronzier. There are things radiating in the violet fog, waiting to be discovered. Journeys that are worth making, but will not necessarily provide any more answers. Something is happening somewhere, once again.

Every artist on this SOMEWHERE III compilation is expressing their unique experience through sound waves, telling stories and uncovering a piece of themselves. Is there a line that divides your consciousness from the next? This compilation inhabits a space, best experienced as one entity with many faces. From Love over Entropy and Ripperton’s quantum temperature organic grooves to KAAP’s lush and retro Sunset Vertigo. From Sigward providing an emotional ambient journey to Kiani & His Legion’s Japanese sounding Motion Academy. From Aril Brikha’s disco infused Eat The Heart to Tracey’s hypnotizing dance floor affair. The tracks morph into the next without leaving any trace or clues, every moment presenting something new to discover. Nothings lasts but nothing is lost and there is something for everyone.

In support of Bandcamp’s recent stand against The U.S. administration’s position against active transgender-military-personnel, seven artists (including myself) have chosen that their stance shouldn't go alone. As of this Friday Bandcamp will be donating all profits towards the Oakland-based Transgender Law Center, an organization which not only gives Trans teens a platform to build communities but helps in all aspects of Trans litigation. In an effort to spread diversity and inclusion within our music, we felt that using this compilation as a channel for change was the least we could offer. 

Capacity of Color was compiled to promote freedom of expression as well as tolerance towards LGBTQ communities and other marginalized groups. 

The compilation can be purchased exclusively through Bandcamp - for a limited time. All additional proceeds from our end will be donated to the Transgender Law Center and ACLU.

Amsterdam based artist nthng continues to have a busy year. Following up an album on Lobster Theremin and EP on Transatlantic, he now lands on Delsin with three tracks that touch on driving dub-techno and dreamy ambient. 

'Oralage' opens with upbeat drum programming and gliding hits that make for a smooth flowing groove. Distant pads add some spacey atmospheres and the production is effortlessly warm and driving. 'A Souls Search' takes time out to drift in the cosmos, with waves of muted euphoria washing over you as you sink into clouds of ambient bliss. Lastly, 'Turn To Gaia' is a dubbed out techno roller, with long legged drums looping down low, reverberating chords adding weight and distant bell sounds charting the whole thing in a harmonic glow. It rounds out a super smooth and seductive EP.
