I've Got A River Of Life Flowing Within Me

growing up together in the Lord (first term sisters spring 2023)

Among all the trees in the garden of Eden, only two are mentioned by name: (1) the tree of life and (2) the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:9). These two trees represent two principles by which a Christian can live: (1) the principle of life and (2) the principle of good and evil.

Eating the tree of the knowledge of good and evil results in death (Genesis 2:17), and the devil is the source of death (Hebrews 2:14). Christ is the source of life (John 11:25, 14:6); He came that we may have life (John 10:10; Colossians 3:4); and He even presented Himself as a vine (John 15:5)—a low-growing, accessible, fruit-bearing tree!

Today, every Christian is like a miniature “garden of Eden.” According to Romans 8:6, our mind is between two choices—just like Adam and Eve in the garden. If we choose to set our mind on the flesh, the result is death. If we choose to set our mind on our human spirit, where Christ dwells (Romans 8:10, 16), the result is life and peace!

Contacting Christ as life in our human spirit is the way to eat Him as the tree of life (John 6:57; Revelation 2:7). At the end of the Bible, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is gone, but the tree of life is an eternal enjoyment to the believers in the New Jerusalem (Revelation 22:14).

Universal Love

It’s impossible to pass through human life without being hurt or offended. Such offenses may leave us wounded—bitter, angry, full of hate.

Yet God loves the world—every human being (John 3:16). He causes the sun to rise on the evil as well as the good (Matt. 5:45), and He charges us to love not only our fellow believers (John 13:34) but even our enemies (Matt. 5:44).

First John 3:14 says, “We know that we have passed out of death into life because we love the brothers.” This transfer from death to life happens once for all when we believe in the Lord.

But the verse continues: “He who does not love abides in death.” This refers to a believer who, in their Christian walk, because of some offense, does not love—perhaps even hates—a fellow believer.

When we are wounded, we may end up in spiritual death and darkness because we’re hating a brother (1 John 3:14; 2:11). But if we allow the Lord within us—the One who loved us and gave His life for us even when we were His enemies (Gal. 2:20; Rom. 5:10)—to infuse us with Himself as love to forgive others, we can pass once more out of death into life.

Please note—to forgive does not mean to condone abuse or return to an abusive situation. We can let go of an offense and no longer have any significant relationship with the offender. If you are experiencing or have experienced physical or emotional abuse, we encourage you to seek help from a trained mental health professional in addition to opening to the Lord.

Mercy unto Me

This is the last of the eight songs we prepared for the North America College Training in July 2023.

Like "Mercy unto Me," this isn't a new song. It's a Scripture song that H.J. and a college classmate, J.L., wrote a long time ago for 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a. It's a fitting conclusion to this collection of songs on love, the "most excellent way" (1 Cor. 12:31). Love prevails!
