This week on our Suncloud episode, our Sunbox Ambassador, Collin Afrika sparked a conversation with Marlyn Hael, who is a social worker at ACVV, an organization in the social services field.

When Covid-19 hit, many South Africans were without jobs and the number of unemployed citizens took a hike. Marlyn shares the causes of unemployment and how it has affected many individuals. They bring us to light on the issue of unemployed individuals not being granted freedom of expression in their households and the community at large, due to the lack of financial stability.

The effect of unemployment in communities

As we close out Youth Month we remember the sacrifices made by the previous generations of South Africans in 1976, and we listen to the urgent concerns facing young people today in 2022.

On this Suncloud episode, “Sparkies”, Roneatens Steven from Robertson, Western Cape and Mthobisi Mzamo Ngwenya from Mkhize Village, Mpumalanga took to their mics to broadcast the most pressing issues facing young people in their communities. Topics of discussion included widespread unemployment, lack of access to practical training and soaring inflation. There is an ebb and flow across these voices. While some  are traumatised by their situation, others remain hopeful that one day all South Africans will have equal access to resources.

On our Suncloud Episode today is Sunbox Ambassador. Zibusiso Moyo from Lupane, Zimbabwe. 🌻

She chats with Nkosini Khupe, a Journalism and Media Studies Lecturer, discussing the importance of media literacy for rural audiences. Their conversation sheds light on the significance of media literacy for rural audiences. 

Nkosini points out that one of the major challenges faced by rural communities is the lack of access to resources like digital devices and reliable communication infrastructure. This limitation, such as the absence of boosters and limited TV and radio waves, further exacerbates the information gap between rural and urban areas. Nkosini emphasizes that misinformation has a severe impact on rural communities, leading to inappropriate responses to various issues with a specific example mentioned is the misinformation surrounding vaccines, which has resulted in many people in rural areas opting not to get vaccinated due to unfounded fears and false information. 

To address these challenges, Nkosini stresses the importance of media literacy initiatives tailored specifically for rural audiences. The government and civil society organizations have a crucial role to play in strengthening media literacy efforts targeted at rural communities.

The podcast focuses on overcoming stigma, youth voices talking about HIV/AIDS and the affects of COVID19 on those living with HIV. Cleopas was the star of a short film a few years back made by Makhulu Media for Childrens Radio Foundation - in the film Cleopas, who was 24 at the time, shares his story as a young man living with HIV in Zambia. “When I heard I was HIV-positive I wanted to kill myself. I learned that when you have HIV, you have a monster inside you … Then I learned that with ARVs (anti-retroviral treatment) you can live a long life and you can treat it.”

Cook Off is an unlikely feel-good Zimbabwean story that follows the journey of Anesu, a down-on-her-luck single mother from Harare’s Budiriro township. Anesu becomes a national sensation after she qualifies for Zimbabwe’s top reality TV cooking show, but soon finds herself out of her depth battling against professional chefs. It features rising star Tendaiishe ‘Tendie’ Chitima, popular rapper Tehn Diamond and the much-beloved ‘Neria’ star Jesesi Mungoshi as the grandmother, as well as a host of other familiar faces – and was made against the odds, on a tiny budget. The filmmakers behind Cook Off were trying to restart a once-proud film industry in Zimbabwe that had declined over decades of political and economic turmoil.

Mocumi interviews social worker and therapist, Janine Van Den Heever

Sunshine Cinema is a solar powered media network. We train youth to be impact producers hosting free film screenings on mobile solar powered cinema kits (the Sunbox). We distribute independent award winning African media content. Our Ambassadors focus on hosting #SparkConversation sessions inspired by the African films we screen that deal with themes of gender equality, building local economies, active citizenship and government accountability. We recognise the power of popular culture as a gateway for many people to access participatory politics; the #SparkConversations engagements position communities, in particular young people as informed civic actors. We have developed a free podcast series The SunCloud. Every week the Ambassadors select relevant topics and record interviews with community leaders, civil society groups, journalists, and filmmakers. The content is shared on community Whatsap groups, and social media platforms and through Webinars with low data usage. We are building a youth led current affairs podcast that captures public opinion not only about the affects of COVID19, but what the pandemic reveals about broader socioeconomic inequalities faced by the local communities.
