RTcmix is a real-time software "language" for doing digital sound synthesis and signal-processing. It is written in C/C++, and is distributed open-source, free of charge. In certain respects, it is similar in function to other extant unit-generator-based software languages such as CSOUND, SuperCollider and (to a lesser extent) JSyn and Max/MSP -- they do share a common heritage, after all. There are some differences, however, between all these languages... and variety is of course the spice of life!

Erste Ideen für ein Stück zu Adornos Vortrag „Kultur und Verwaltung“ (1959) entstanden Ende 2019, nachdem ich mich eingehend mit diesem Text befasst hatte. Nicht nur seine äußert geistreiche und differenzierte Betrachtungsweise, sondern auch seine ausgefeilte Sprache sowie feine Ironie haben mich dazu bewogen, eine Arbeit mit Zitaten aus diesem Vortrag zu gestalten. Selbst über 60 Jahre später hat dieser Vortrag nichts an Aktualität eingebüßt und die ausgewählten Zitate bieten den geneigten Hörer:innen viele Anregungen, um über den Zusammenhang von Kultur, Verwaltung respektive die Kulturindustrie nachzudenken. Die Textzitate werden z.T. durch Musikbeispiele von Schallplatten (Bach, Beethoven, Paul Kuhn, Bristol Bar Sextett) aus den 60ern Jahren ergänzt. 
Die Grundform der Komposition ist aus mehreren 8 stimmigen Dreieckswellen aufgebaut, die sich langsam kaleideskopartig ändern. Im Verlauf des Stückes kommen dann auch Sägezahn und Pulswellen hinzu. Nach ca. 40 Minuten ändert sich der Charakter der Grundform, indem perkussive, u.a. Karplus Strong Klänge sowie Geräusche verwendet werden. 
Insgesamt 16 Zitate aus Adornos Vortrag wurden in bearbeiteter Form in dem Werk eingebettet. Kurze Schnipsel der eingangs erwähnten Musikbeispiele unterstreichen die Wortzitate. Im letzten Drittel erscheinen die Wortzitate in fortlaufender Weise, die mit Hilfe von Granularsynthese, Resynthese und Multisynthese verarbeitet wurden.

Electro-acoustic composition by Joachim Zoepf with text and music quotations. 
Initial ideas for a piece on Adorno's lecture "Culture and Administration" (1959) emerged at the end of 2019, after I had studied this text in detail. Not only his extremely witty and differentiated way of looking at things, but also his sophisticated language and subtle irony have irony prompted me to create a work with quotations from this lecture. Even over 60 years even more than 60 years later, this lecture has lost none of its topicality and the selected quotations listeners many ideas for thinking about the connection between culture, administration and the and the culture industry. Some of the quotations are accompanied by musical examples from records (Bach, Beethoven, Paul Kuhn, Bristol Bar Sextet) from the 1960s. The basic form of the compoition is made up of several 8-voice triangular waves that change slowly like a kaleidoscope. slowly change like a kaleidoscope. In the course of the piece, sawtooth and pulse waves are added. pulse waves are added. After about 40 minutes, the character of the basic form changes in that percussive, Karplus Strong sounds and noises are used. A total of 16 quotations from Adorno's lecture were embedded in the work in edited form. 
Short snippets of the musical examples mentioned at the beginning underline the word quotations. In the last In the last third, the word quotations appear in a continuous manner, which has been processed with the help of granular synthesis, resynthesis and multisynthesis, resynthesis and multisynthesis.

This composition is dedicated to Susan Sontag.

The basis for this piece was a single German word - "Zeitenwende". I edited it with my modular system in such a way that a whole piece was created from it. Here you can hear only the first 2 minutes of the piece. The whole piece will be published on Bandcamp in the course of the next few weeks, along with other works, so that you have the opportunity to listen to the whole piece and possibly other works as well.
Diese Kompositon ist Susan Sontag gewidmet.

Grundlage für dieses Stück war ein einzelnes deutsches Wort - "Zeitenwende". Dieses habe ich mit meinem Modularsystem so bearbeitet dass ein ganzes Stück daraus entstanden ist. Hier sind nur die ersten knapp 2 Minuten des Stückes zu hören. Das ganzes Stück werde im Laufe der nächsten Wochen  mit noch weiteren Arbeiten auf Bandcamp veröffentlichen, so dass die Möglichkeit besteht sich das ganze Stück anzuhören und eventuell andere Arbeiten auch noch.

On Jeffrey Morgan's initiative - the man from Seattle had recently settled in Cologne - a saxophone quartet was formed in 1993 that did not use the usual licks and patterns, but felt committed to the production of sounds under the premise of free association of free wind musicians. They acted musically, they talked later - also a reference to the subtle irony of the eponymous title: after all, William Bonney was none other than Billy The Kid, who became famous under his working name.

Certainly, a lot was demanded of the audience's ear canals, but no less of their own musical production. Freely improvised saxophone quartets don't just know beautiful melodies over repetitive beats: how many such combinations have always bored us?  The challenge was not only to develop the saxophone's own sounds, but also to combine the various playing practices and attitudes of the players into an expressive whole.
Keune, Zoepf, Morgan and Speicher were not afraid to take risks and often came alarmingly close to the edge of falling without ever losing the desire to cross it.  Safe paths were unknown to the quartet, even if everyone knew how to contribute their own personal and tried and tested ingredients.
No wonder the quartet remained an underground insider tip, shunned by people with an affinity for jazz ("where's the form here?" ...) and regarded with a nasal sniff by the acrobats of the ping-pong style as not always capable of satisfying.

It came as it had to: 2007 was the end of this kind of instrumental conspiracy.
