You might remember late last year Federal Agriculture Minister David Littleproud announced he would veto big business buying up large tracts of farm land for carbon offsets. Let’s take a look at a conflict between agriculture and mininf, this one in Swan Hill where farmers fear they’re being left out of the consultation process to assess the environmental risk of a mineral sands mining project. It’s called the Goschen project and is the flagship development of VHM mines which hopes to produce rare earth minerals such as zircon and titanium on a large scale, starting in 2025. A group opposing the development Mine Free Mallee Farmers say they’ve been left out of the public scrutiny of the Environmental Effects Statenent, or EES, because it was held over the summer harvest season. Australia is looking towards harvesting a “marginally larger” winter crop this season, despite significant weather challenges. In its winter crop forecast, Rabobank says the nation is on track to produce an estimated total winter crop of 47.1 million tonnes, up one per cent (0.5 million tonnes) on the previous season, but down a significant 13 per cent on the five-year average.
