Etude 1 - Stochastic Music for Electronics and VST Piano and Flute

Second generative patch using Softube Modular. This is an attempt at stricter rhythm and harmony. Rhythm generated by clocks and square wave oscillators fed into logic modules and sequencers. Melodies generated by white noise fed into a sample and hold module and quantized to a series of sequenced quantizer modules, each tuned to a different chord.

Early version of first movement of Anxiosomatic Circuits. Composed entirely of modular synth patches.

Modular Sonata 5.21.2022

Eight oscillators with their pitches and rhythms driven by brownian bridges. Pitches quantized to a chromatic scale and rhythms quantized to 1/16 notes. Inspired by Iannis Xenakis' treatise, Formalized Music.

Etude 3 - Stochastic modular synthesizer

Same as Etude 3 - Stochastic modular synthesizer, but converted to midi and played through a Rhodes piano sample player.

Etude 3 - Stochastic piece for sampled Rhodes piano

Composed entirely by patching modular synthesizers using generative and stochastic processes. Patches were then converted to midi and arranged for Pierrot ensemble + percussion and synth. First completed piece - Opus One.

Anxiosomatic Circuits, Op. 1

Stochastic melody that splits through a dichotomous branching process. The melody begins on piano, then that single melody branches to a melody on each a flute and clarinet, and then those two melodies branch into a string quartet. The pitches of the primary melody are derived from a "walking" random control voltage quantized to a chromatic scale. Then, the pitches of each branching melody are created by adding or subtracting similarly created control voltages. Rhythms are created by random triggers with differing pauses between branches. The quantized notes are then sent to VST instruments through a midi interface.

Etude 4 - Stochastic piece for VST chamber ensemble

This is an attempt to build on the generative jazz concept of Etude 2. This patch focuses on rhythm in a free jazz context instead of playing straight over chord changes. The drum patch is based on a Turing machine and was patched after some careful listening to Milford Graves. Horn changes are triggered by the crash cymbal. Patched in VCV Rack with midi outs sent to Logic. Samples are from Logic's stock sample library.

Etude 5 - Stochastic Music For VST Free Jazz Quartet

I decided to check in with my musical roots and made a generative crust punk patch in VCV Rack. The riffs and cymbals come from Turing machines, the kick and snare from sequencers, and the guitar solos from a shift register and arpeggiator fed by the riffs. The instruments are all VSTs. The vocals are from Soundiron Voices of Rage sample player.

Seven pieces for Pierrot ensemble with percussion and synth. Like Anxiosomatic Circuits, these pieces were composed using generative and stochastic methods. Virtual modular synth patches were converted to midi and played through VST instruments. I can make the pieces available as sheet music by request.
