la historia se remonta a muchos siglos atrás, a unos tiempos ahora envueltos en la bruma del misterio. Algunos historiadores sitúan el origen de la fiesta de San Valentín en la antigua Roma, en la celebración de las lupercales, también llamadas lupercalia.

Estas se celebraban ante diem XV Kalendas Martias, lo que equivalía al 15 de febrero. Supuestamente la palabra deriva de lupus (lobo) un animal que representaba al dios Fauno, que tomó el sobrenombre de Luperco, y de hircus, por el macho cabrío, un animal impuro. Los acólitos se reunían en una cueva sagrada y, siguiendo la tradición, el sacerdote sacrificaba una cabra y, a continuación, los niños salían a la calle para azotar a las mujeres con la piel de los animales para incentivar su fertilidad.
