In 2019 the Great Barrier Reef experienced the 3rd mass bleaching event in the last 5 years, driven by abnormally warm ocean temperatures. With each new year field research is emerging that indicates these events, driven by the worlds human population and our continued burning of fossil fuels, is warming oceans and leading to larger and more common bleaching events and degrading coral reefs around the world. This weeks guest, Dr David Abrego, is a Coral ecology researcher at Southern Cross University working to develop heat-tolerant corals that can bounce back, and become the basis for coral reef health preserving their unique beauty for future generations to come.
