The Word Is Love show is 2 years old! To mark the occasion we celebrate Studio 54 style with a tribute Nu Disco mix of many party tracks you will recognise sounding a little different for a modern dancefloor.

There's classic tracks remixed with style by Sister Sledge, WHAM and Gwen McCrae plus lot's more big names you will recognise. Also expect fire remixes by The Reflex, Dave Lee, Horse Meat Disco, Luke Solomon, Dr Packer, Late Nite Tuff Guy, HiFi Sean, Masters At Work (MAW)and Dimitri From Paris. 

The original show was recorded on Larry Levan's birthday July 20th 2019 and broadcast on 26th July 2019. It's been an epic journey of musical history and nostalgia with the added joy of experimentation. Thank you to all those who have listened.

A Londoner through and through, Arthur Smith, more commonly known as Artwork, is a man who has been a key part of some of the capital’s pivotal music scenes in the last two decades. After a time producing techno under his Grain alias in the 90s, fore-fronting dubstep with Big Apple Records in the early noughties and forming Magnetic Man alongside Skream and Benga in 2007 – Artwork is now busy injecting his character into various parties, festivals and clubs around the globe.

As a longtime friend of the shop, we reached out to Arthur to see if he would be up for contributing a mix to close out 2021. For the occasion, Arthur went above and beyond and the result is a whopping one hour and forty-minute long recording packed with all kinds of rare disco, funk, boogie and house treasures.

Phonica Mix Series 90: Artwork

I quit DJing in 2012 due to various reasons, but I undoubtedly still have a BIG passion for House and soul music. All of this is because of Frankie. I started DJing because of Frankie. I started producing because of Frankie. This one-off radio show contains my personal favourite Frankie Knuckles productions and remixes. These songs have meaning to me. They bring joy, warmth and a sense of community. When I used to DJ at The Arches (where I last saw Frankie perform) I used to play a lot of these tracks. And when I did really soulful sets in a bar, there was ALWAYS a Frankie Knuckles track which suited the mood. Frankie was 59 and after 40 years in this business he STILL had loads more to give. His unexpected passing came as a major shock to me. He was an inspiration and he will NEVER be forgotten. I hope you enjoy listening and dancing to these tracks as much as you will any other tribute mix you’ll hear. RIP Frankie, and thank you for bringing House music to the world.
