Modernized versions of the Brides have them liberated from any Master and are unconventional women fighting against the patriarchy and the “traditions” that try to keep them submissive. Female vampires of the 2010s show us the full spectrum of these women - they are taking back the night. The Rise of Carmilla: A Satanic Estate Presentation

In this episode, we will discuss how Season of the Witch is representative of the dual nature within women seen in the archetypes of The Witch versus The Wife. We will explore the role of the wife in western culture and the societal expectations placed upon women in the 1970s. Also popular during this time was the rise of occultism and witchcraft among these (primarily) white women due to the independence it created. As well, we will examine the image of the witch as representative of feminism and sexual freedom that could be seen taking place during the Sexual Revolution (1960-1980) in which Season of the Witch takes place. As we watch Joan move from the role of a desperate, constrained housewife/mother to a sexually liberated witch, Season of the Witch suggests that she potentially traded one gilded cage for another. 

How does Romero’s perspective about these roles compare to that of two alternative women living their unconventional lives in 2021? This is what we intend to find out in probing the more obscure and underrated 1973 film. Enjoy and welcome to our dark side...

We will do a mini recap of major historical events of the 1960s and where horror was at with experimental films like Psycho (1960), Peeping Tom (1960) and Blood Feast (1963) shocking audiences leading to the rebirth of zombies with Night of the Living Dead (1968). Then we will leave North America to talk about what horror was doing in countries like Japan, France and Great Britain with the films Kuroneko (1968), Eyes Without a Face (1962) and Horror of Dracula (1958).

Episode 60 Original Vs. Remake: The Evil Dead, Evil Dead & Bloody Muscle Body Builder In Hell

As far as necrophilia films go, none are more recognizable than German filmmaker, Jorg Buttgereit's, Nekromantik. Epitomizing underground transgressive cinema, Nekromantik shows us the sensual side of the paraphilia, giving us a film with a legacy of sexual depravity and iconic imagery. A cerebral exploitation film that forces us to witness sex, death and body fluids, and how they cum together so perfectly. Can we fuck the fear of death away? My guest for this episode is Éric Falardeau! Éric has written and directed short films, music videos, the cult horror feature Thanatomorphose (2012), which has won him several awards in film festivals. He also wrote the porn-horror movie The Thing from the Lake (2019). Éric has guest-curated exhibitions at the Cinémathèque québécoise and published volumes on erotic cinema, the history of special effects in Quebec and on body fluids in gore and pornography. He is currently working on his second feature film!!!

In this episode, we head to Mexico with “Mexico’s most violent film”, Atroz (2018) by Lex Ortega.  Taking social and political commentary to dark and shocking places, Atroz doesn’t pull any punches - it’s provocative and memorable. It challenges everything you thought you knew and more. Taking inspiration from Ruggero Deodato, renowned filmmaker behind Cannibal Holocaust (and is an associate producer), Ortega’s first feature is an endurance test worth taking.

My guest for this episode is Mikey Peralta Jr! Mikey is a Mexican-American creator who focuses on Latin American cinema with a social justice lens. He has a monthly column with Dread Central called Horror en Español. He also releases daily content on Tik Tok and Instagram about the horror genre and Latin culture.

In the episode, we head to Chile with the unforgettable film by Lucio Rojas, Trauma (2017). A film inspired by the true events of the 17 year dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, its' brutal realism gives us an unflinching glimpse into the world of his regime and the intergenerational trauma that follows. My guest for this episode is Jerry J. Sampson! Jerry is an award-winning screenwriter and fiction author known for her work in horror and thriller genres. She is currently developing a true crime feature film with a well-known producer and her short film The Safety Games, directed by Jeremiah Kipp, is debuting at DC Shorts International Film Festival.

Her screenplay Problematic won Best Feature Screenplay at the Renegade Film Festival and has been recognized by FilmQuest, Screamfest, and HorrOrigins. She is a member of the Horror Writers Association and the author of The Scream & Other Dark Stories.

A first of its kind for Taboo Terrors! Once I watched the incredible documentary Beyond Horror: The History and Subculture of Red Films (2019), I just had to talk to the woman responsible for it. Jessie is a SFX artist, director, writer and not to mention the sweetest person you will ever meet. It was a pleasure to converse about her new production company 93/93 Pictures, our mutual love of extreme cinema and the backlash she has experienced for being a woman in the extreme horror genre.
