Thirty-four years ago, a group of lads from Bradford decided to build on their blossoming DJ career by making music together with some borrowed equipment. Less than two years later, they were celebrating being signed by a major label as figureheads of a brand-new musical movement, one that would help British dance music fall in love with deep, weighty bass.

45 tracks, from across the last 33 years, remastered for your audible pleasure. This is the story of Unique 3, the band that birthed Bleep & Bass – British dance music's first genuinely homegrown style – and set in motion a movement now known as UK bass. Yet until the publication in 2019 of Matt Anniss's alternative history of UK dance music in the acid house and rave era, Join The Future: Bleep Techno and the Birth of British Bass Music, the role played by these West Yorkshire pioneers had been overlooked and overwritten.

33/45, the first retrospective of Unique 3's lengthy career, aims to set the record straight. Showcasing a mixture of classic cuts, lesser-known gems and previously unheard material from the archive, the compilation deftly showcases the ground-breaking freshness of their early material – far-sighted fusions of Electro, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Dub, Dancehall, Acid House and Techno – while also highlighting the quality of their often under-appreciated later releases.

The compilation was put together by Unique 3 lynchpin Edzy.It includes some seriously important musical milestones, with the original 1988 mix of bleep & bass blueprint 'The Theme' being joined by the band's Original Dubplate mix of 'Weight For The Bass' – created for their weekly Sunday night Bradford party "The Soundyard" – and Edzy's superb new edit of 'Reality' that is noticeably different from the 1990 Jus' Unique album version.

Other early classics featured on the compilation include fat dancefloor Hip-Hop jam "Musical Melody” which they performed on Top Of The Pops, sub-heavy electro-bleep workout "Code 0274” with the performed live from The Hacienda on The Tube, rushing piano house workout "No More” which they performed on Normski’s Dance Energy, and the razor-sharp breakbeat hardcore heaviness of Edzy's "Activity". On this track, he layered sounds over the now famous drum break from the Winstons' "Amen, Brother" – This distinctive loop from the start of "Activity" would later form the basis of countless jungle records.

Unique 3's resurgence since 2007, when Edzy returned with a new album on Fat! Records is naturally also represented via a string of heavy, club-ready cuts. You'll naturally find comeback single 'Rock The Bass', a bleeping slab of surging electro-house fuzziness, but also lesser-celebrated gems such as the acid-fired electro slammer "Open Up Your Mind", drum & bass workout 'Daddy Ain't Around', the Mr Oizo-esque 'On The Wire', big room house bomb 'Memories Inside My Head' and the rubbery, jazz-sampling breakbeat heat of 'Rude 'bout The Place'. Edzy also brings us bang up to date via melodic Techno cut 'Drone' recently released on his and Gez Varley'*s (of *LFO fame) joint-owned Techno Label "Tan Ta Ra Records."

Breathless and bass-heavy from start to finish and accompanied by detailed liner notes from Matt Anniss, 33/45 is an impressively diverse set that touches on almost all major developments in UK dance music over the last three decades. Yet as eclectic as it may be, it has one unifying force: the power and weight of proper sub-bass. Given Unique 3's role in star:ng the UK bass revolution, you'd expect nothing less.
