It would be dark, and potentially disturbing in the hands of anyone other than Mary Chapin Carpenter who has her unfailing ability to bring sensitivity to every song. Mary has always had the courage and honesty to open her life and her heart, and in so doing she creates a space for her listeners to interpret and do the same. It is cleansing and pleasurable rather than frightening. Perhaps we were given warning of her intention to take her regular theme of “ departure “ to a different level in “ Looking for the Thread .
