I Am An Old Skool Fool

OVERTURE

In the Comanche language “Nʉmʉnʉʉ” (NUH-MUH-NUH) means “The People”.

I’ve been a hip hop fan since I was ten years old. The year was 1988 and my cousin Jimmy and I went to spend the summer with my grandparents in Colorado. Jimmy was older and much cooler than me. He had a boom box and a box of tapes that opened up a new and exciting world of discovery and wonder. The Fat Boys, LL Cool J and Whodini made me reimagine how music could be made. I’d grown up in the church and my stepfather was a musician, so I’d always been exposed to and loved music. My dad brought me up on classic country like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, as well as The Grateful Dead and Bob Seger. My mom always had two or three tapes in heavy rotation when we were in her car. Whitney Houston’s classic debut album, The Dirty Dancing Soundtrack and Amy Grant Christian albums. From my dad’s music I learned to appreciate soul and honesty in music. My mom’s music made me appreciate pop melodies and vocal harmonies. 
As a hip hop fan I’ve been influenced by who I’ll name as my Mt. Rushmore of beat makers. Jay Dilla, MF DOOM, DJ Premiere and Pete Rock. Not a very original or creative list I know, but they’re the best for a reason. 
As far as MCs go, I’d name Pharoahe Monch, MF DOOM, Talib Kweli, Masta Ace, Nas, Common and Black Thought as among my very favorites. 
I aspire to make music that any of these amazingly talented artists would consider rapping over. 
On a personal note, I’m 44 years old, I’m a Pisces and I love long walks on the beach. 
I’m a vegetarian, I still play basketball at least once a week and I try to meditate as often as I can. I truly believe that music is among the strongest forces is nature. During the pandemic I reassessed my life. I have a history degree that I’m not using and I am a bartender. None of my career prospects were making me happy and when I meditated and prayed on what did make me happy the answer was clear. Music has always been the thing that makes me happy and inspired. Life is too short to not at least try to do something that makes you happy. My music is my attempt at that. If I can make other people happy in the process then I will have been successful. ❤️
