Our March edition is our very first foreign guest mix, courtesy of dutchman Tsepo! Jan aka Tsepo is a friend of the house (amigo, right?) and a true food-lover. He even did an internship at Tribeca, a famous restaurant in The Netherlands. As a DJ you might know him from residencies & gigs at Trouw (RIP!), De School, Paradise City, Contrair, you name it!
 
The mix goes from jazz to house, funk to beats. Always warm, always full of vibes.

April brings summer to town & one of our closest friends to the Amigo dining floor. Yves aka A Local Hero aka Hush Hefner aka Mountainbike Monster cooked up a 2.5hrs mix (!) for us to enjoy. Fits perfectly with a nice bottle of Pinot Noir & a Spicy Feta Brûlée, something we definitely will do multiple times. It’s looking like we might open doors again soon after a 7 months lockdown, so we’re on a good vibe head nodding to the tunes of Mr. Yves!

A Local Hero - Music For Sharing Plates

“March winds and April showers bring May flowers and June bugs”, is how the saying goes. Unfortunately, spring still needs to come around the corner but you know good times are coming when there’s a fresh edition of our beloved Music For Sharing Plates mixtape – just for fun! And this month’s edition sure is.

 

This time Kuryakin & Nicky B are the ones providing you with fresh tunes to brighten up your lunch. Ilja en Nick have been digging for grooves for a long time and are part of VZW Freehouse, the organisation behind Monterey in the beautiful Citadelpark. During lockdown last year they founded Radio Ruit, Ghent’s very own online community radio uniting, and providing a platform for the city’s versatile music scene.

Every Sunday afternoon from 14h to 18h Radio Ruit challenges young creatives and collectives to take over the online radio waves and show you their world on radioruit.com and on their Mixcloud page. It’s also the very first radio station in residence at “de Vooruit”. However, from July on they will move shop and build a studio at an old monastery (Theresia) in the city centre of Ghent (Theresianenstraat) that is surely going to be a lively hotspot. Something to look forward to as a lot of events and a very fine summer bar are coming your way. Keep an eye out!

The mix they made for us is full of breezy grooves, funk and some recent and less recent finds from trips to Lisbon, with the Portuguese language being somewhat of a recurrent theme. Two hours of afro, funk, soul and music from Cape Verde, Brasil, Portugal and beyond.

He recorded his set live (!) at our little restaurant during an easy lunch service. He pulled it of with a broken pick-up and a belly full of fine food. What about that!

Every month Amigo (a restaurant cum club in Ghent) invites some of their extended family members to curate a series of mixtapes, dedicated to make you feel just that little bit more hungry. And willing. 

Up for listening this month is John Noseda, a multidisciplinary artist who is best known for his high energy/sweaty sets. Always keeping the dance floor moving, always on the top of everyone’s lips. And hips. 

If he’s not organizing parties, festivals, fashion shows or dinner parties, he’s definitely producing music of digging for that one lost gem. He’s a true music lover with an enormously diversified music taste. From kitschy 80s pop to the more raw Detroit stuff from the 90s. Enjoy the snacks, enjoy the dinner party, enjoy the company!

Like a long anticipated dinner party, where chaotic conversations rule the night. Nobody has to finish the sentence they started, cause it’s just the that kind of night. Over excited, shouting, laughing. All gas no breaks. Like a palindrome: play it in reverse.

In his own words: 

"My lunch is electronic. That could be the title of a David Cronenburg movie, but it is also how I ended up making this mix. The inspiration is techno, but techno in its broadest sense. A sense that is pretty hard to find nowadays. Techno at heart is about experiment, with a dose of melancholy, a dash of introspection and a the whole range of human emotions thrown into the mix. That is exactly what I wanted to stress here. If you dig this one, let's have lunch together!”

Today’s episode is handcrafted by Antwerps very own DTM Funk. David isn’t a stranger; hosting a monthly radio show at The Word Radio (Rhythm District), running his own San-Kofa Rhythm Records and being a very versatile DJ overall. He creates a 100+ mins dreamworld for us to enjoy over lunch and/or dinner — we can’t wait to press play. The second release on San-Kofa is just announced, a wonderful journey by Soft Focus.

As always, no genres or boundaries — just for fun. The august edition is created by @aso_asin, an Antwerp favorite. He’s an Antwerp based DJ who’s into collecting and sharing music from all corners of the world: from ’70s jazz-funk and progrock to ’90s hip-hop and electronic music. As a DJ, Aso Asin has shared the bill with celebrated artists such as Shigeto, Om Unit, Clark, Jameszoo, Kutmah, Selda, Omar Souleyman, Lefto and Andy Votel. His guest appearances on Drrrip, Kiosk Radio, Studio Brussel and The Lot Radio in New York showcase his versatility.
 
Besides his activities as a DJ, he’s also one of the founders of Champion Sound, a Belgium based concept that serves as a platform for promoting talented, local beatmakers.
In his own words: 
 
August is usually the month I get to travel in. Due to Covid-19, I won’t be able to do so this year. I know many other people are in the same situation, so I thought: let’s go on an imaginary vacation trip: starting in Anatolia, ending in Africa and of course, a bunch of stops in between. I cherrypicked songs that go well with this steamy, hot weather.

The september edition is created by Antwerp based @fred-nasen, co-founder of We Are Various and Texture Radio host for 10 years now & of course a veteran dj in nightlife since 1993. “I tried to set a mood for people who are having diner, I wanted to start with some jazz by Coltrane & Archie Shepp to go to more balearic with Tommy Mandel & Jasper Van ‘t Hof to end with more uplifting (synth) pop by Eye to Eye and Gerry Rafferty, so you can go for a dance or swim after diner. Hope you enjoy!"

Ghent based restaurant-cum-dancefloor Amigo has invited some of their extended family members to curate a series of mixtapes, dedicated to make you feel just that little bit more hungry. And willing.

This October episode is made with loads of love, experience and craftsmanship by two people we care for very much at Amigo. Gerald & An are pure family! People that are not close to them or us might know them from a very wide range of projects, such as t Misverstand (a bar in Latem), Humør (a design store), John Terras (a culinary pop-up), Les Plachettes (a b&b in Flobecq), Odnar (bar/resto in Oudenaarde), Charlatan (notorious bar/club in Ghent), Jos, Gloria etc. 

They breathe all things horeca and hospitality, so it made sense they cooked up a list containing ten of there favorite restaurants. Be warned: you might get hungry

John Terras was a pop-up bar/bistro at the Reep (Ghent) that now houses the fish restaurant John Dory, run by former Amigo chef Louis Snauwaert. After 60 years, the Leie and the Schelde were reconnected, making Ghent an island again. It was and is quiet and pleasant sitting along the banks of ‘the new graslei’. At John Terras, music was very prominent and therefore very important. We enjoyed creating a mix of fine music that suits cozy dining.

A bold collection of moods, thoughts and feelings. This is one wild dinner.. Max has currently two shows running, one in Brussels and another one in Ghent. He also just released his new book ‘Good Lost Corners’.

Being quite an eclectic person myself I composed this set with three purposes – according to my general activities in a day. A working day in the studio, a late afternoon in the kitchen & a long evening at the diner table. Just like my own cooking habits – this set slowly develops from a French amuse-gueule over to a classic Spanish verdura a la plancha.

Hopping to some groovy Brooklyn comfort food, without forgetting a classic Italian parm! Slowly rounding up with a dark roast ristretto and cigarette. The music is nothing more than an invitation to partake, take a seat at our table. To eat, listen & dance. The set contains music for sharing plates.

My name is Tim and I started Ghent based indie label Unday Records (Trixie Whitley, Millionaire, Dijf Sanders, Mauro Pawlowski…) almost ten years ago. 

Although I mostly listen to sad folk and weeping country when I’m alone, I often turn to jazz, grooves, funk, Brazilian stuff from the Seventies and African music when there’s people around. As no one cares for a depressing or ultra weird soundtrack to his dinner party with friends, I dug up this comforting, upbeat selection from my record collection. This is probably the most happy and danceable version of myself, hope you like it. 

Oh man, this made me realise how I long for a carefree germ free and curfew free dinner with friends.

Our February issue is created by Object & Sounds! Objects & Sounds is a mood-based record store in Gent on a humble mission to encourage a different way of discovering and engaging with music. Inspired by the comforting flavors and warm mood at Amigo, Alec and Aimee put together a selection of laidback tunes that evoke a sense of familiar comfort yet also have a danceable groove going on. A mood of its own, really, as Gentenaars would know.
