All Fall Down

Going off of this month's randomly generated theme, 'Grandparents', I have strung together scattered thoughts that ultimately sums up the theme for me. My Grandparents came to age during the civil rights' era, so there was a lot of pain they went through that probably went into who they became. They were for the most part distant emotionally and conservative in values. To put plainly we don't have a bond of any sort. Which was why it was so difficult to piece this project together. How do you talk about folks you barely know? So what I did was encompassed the feeling and stories I heard coming up about my grandfather. He was a pimp and a drug dealer who managed to escape the life. In turn, it leads him to shelter everyone close to him for fear of them going down that road. Which meant we weren't allowed to play in the neighborhood with other kids among other limits, and the consequences for arguing against his stance would end in abuse labeled under the ambiguous "tough love" structure. In this project, I try to illustrate the effects past trauma can have on your love ones. In this case it was my grandfather's traumas.

Grandparents

Grandparents concept:
One line changing in all methods possible (speed, severity, complexity, perspective, enthusiasm, hope, willingness, love, etc.) to symbolize the changes we face as we grow older on this earth in our bodies seen through the eyes of a seasoned, mature, experienced grandparent. 
Structural/technical concept:
This piece uses one main sequence that is adjusted to make up the entirety. This piece is cyclical and yet always changing, like life.

All In Time

"Bravo To Pedi" means something like "Good Job Boy" in Greek, and is something my grandparents would tell me a lot. Made me sort of self conscious but feel good and loved. I always remember my Papou smiling at me and dancing with him, having a great time with music. My Yaya was a bit more reserved, but she could also cut loose. I remember by dad telling a story about how the disco smash hit "Funkytown" was her favorite song that she heard with she came to the States to visit. Although I never met my mother's parents, I have evidence on cassette of drunken musical nights, my abuelo singing and playing guitar beautifully and joyously. His fav American song was "If You Think I'm Sexy". I tried to do an interpolation of the two tracks, but that didn't work out. This is a cover of "Funkytown" by Lipps Inc., using Greek & Spanish musical elements and done in a playful environment to emulate those good times gone. Enjoy.
