LAZZY2WICE - Every Time

Years active: years, pfft, not even - about five or six months in 1988
Members: Me on gtr and lead vox, Hux on bass and backing vox, John on main guitar and backing vox, and Michael something-or-other on drums. 
Influences: Paisley Underground like The Three O’Clock and Green on Red / The dBs ‘Stand for decibels’ / Bob Mould, Husker Du and Sugar / REM / Hoodoo Gurus / ‘Hard day’s night’ era Beatles / The Byrds / The Eastern Dark / Mamas and the Papas / Kinks / House of Love / Echo and the Bunnymen / Rain Parade / The Smiths / Soul Asylum / The Wonder Stuff / The Only Ones / The Smithereens / Camper Van Beethoven / The Troggs / The Church / Costello’s ‘This year’s model’ / the chug chug chunk of Jason and the Scorchers and Georgia Satellites … hell why not throw in ‘Welcome to my nightmare’ era Alice Cooper, Thin Lizzy, Wings, some glam stomp The Sweet. 
On the fourth album of stuff - Sunday Morning - it was half drone-y psychedelia aka Beatles stuff like ‘All too much’ and ‘Only a northern song’ by way of early Hunters and Collectors and dance grooves. Yup.
I mean look at that list. What a mixed bag. While some of the songs that popped up owe some clear debts to the above, most of them you’d be hard pressed to pick. Maybe. Or maybe not, maybe I’m too close to them to pick it. Maybe it’s all of the above or (almost) none of the above.
But like Instant Memory in 1981/1982, while this band weren’t together long enough to trim it all down and perfect their voice, they were a band I liked and thought had lots of potential. 
Some explanation … we got a drummer pretty quick smart, Michael, and knocked up our first set of songs in around three months or so. All at this quite good rehearsal space on Chapel Street right next to a fine bar for rehearsal half time break drinks. The space was run by a guy who was convinced bananas were part of some alien invasion plot. I kid thee not. And it was a recording studio, which begs the question as to why we didn’t fork out some cash and ask him to record a rehearsal at some stage. Missed opportunity, that. We used to stir the owner when we buzzed the intercom by announcing ourselves as different band names each rehearsal. ‘Hi, War Pigs here’. My how we laughed, what wags we were! Actually we did laugh a lot, good times.
We were so keen to play that we lined up a gig quick smart even if the songs we had weren’t quite finessed. They ranged from sort of cute to pop and fuzz, from slightly skewed to meat and potatoes straight up ‘Rawk’n’roll maaan’ to, well, who knows whatever.
And then Michael was given an ultimatum by his partner along the lines of ‘it’s either that band or me and our hairdressing business’. And thusly a week or so before the ig, he bailed. Wouldn’t even do that one show after all the rehearsals. Sheesh and far worse cuss words.
Mixed bag though that first set was, there was quite some promise there I think and had that line up lasted, given not even a year of gigs and trying stuff and throwing some things out and fixing others, I reckon we would have gotten that voice and there might have been a cracker of a guitar pop set.
We stuck around post Michael though, working with a drum machine and re-working some songs and coming up with some drone-y, noisy psychedelic groove stuff too. That lasted maybe another month and a bit and that was it.
If you listen vaguely close you’ll recognise some 8 or 9 or so songs are variations on the same three or four tunes with different melodies, feels, and words. So there’s forty songs or four ten track albums to keep it tidy, 32 are songs the band actually did and eight are tracks that I either had acoustically demo’d on my old cassette recorder at home for inclusion or songs from the late period GLF that the Taylors also attempted or listed as possibilities to attempt. They're maybe a bit cute.
Anyway, overture and cut the lights. These four band albums are best played extra loud.
