Britpop went beyond the pretty-fresh face of Damon Albarn or the hilarious drunk interviews of the Gallagher brothers. It actually started underground, with a more queer and feminine take on what Britishness could be—not the laddishness it’s now known for.

This mix goes beyond the Union Jack and greets you with regional accents, keeping you in check with the diversity that Britain has—and why that’s something to be proud of.

Bands such as Suede, Saint Etienne, Placebo, The Divine Comedy, Shampoo, and Space are just a handful of gems you should re-discover.

I hope you’ll enjoy this mix as much as I did while making it. It’s full of underrated tunes from the British music scene, alongside backstage meet-ups and interviews—like a toothless Robbie Williams at Glastonbury in 1995.

Here they come, the Beautiful Ones (Britpop Special)

Growing up, my two favorite television shows were One Tree Hill and The O.C. Identifying as a Peyton Sawyer who was in love with a Seth Cohen. I began to wonder: if they met and fell in love, what would their playlist look like?

Whilst researching for this mix, I realised they made me like myself a bit more. Because drawing, listening to alternative music and social awkwardness became cool attributes. I was so into the shows that I used to make fictional storylines with Windows Movie Maker. Sadly, they're all gone with the old desktop computer that stood in the corner of our kitchen. But thanks, 2000s American television, for the therapy.

Inspired by that time we're traveling  through iconic soundtrack moments (think Imogen Heap when Marissa shoots Trey, or Jimmy Eat World when a poem about heartbreak is recited) and dialogue from both shows that celebrate indie-nerdy-tormented teenage identity.
