actually it's rounded binary. you see, near the end at 1:09, we actually get the triadic motif from the beginning of the A section of the piece repeated at the end. now, a standard binary piece is structured AB - that is, there is an "A" section, followed by a "B" section, with no repetition whatsoever. the sections may share some ideas, but they are fundamentally different.   rounded binary is derived from the standard binary structure as at the end of the piece, some of the material from A is repeated after B is finished, giving the piece a more complete feeling. It's important to note also how this is different from ternary, which is structured ABA, with the A section being repeated after B.   anyway, as the piece ends with the triadic motif with the same underlying chord progression as the beginning, i think it's really more appropriate to consider this as rounded binary than just a straightforward binary.  also it sounds shit. 6/10.

OUEMS Mix #014 welcomes producer, composer and now DJ MGNS!, a young aficionado of the eclectic with already a decade of music making under his belt. The 20-year-old’s experimental practice includes field recording and multi-level processing through processors such as the RT-20 (the rotary not the rifle), and if it wasn’t obvious enough, his influences run wide: from IDM and Warp-adjacent Aphex wobble, to contemporary ambient Oli XL and even Kate Bush.

Starting with a contemplative climb, MGNS! layers laid-back Four Tet with off-kilter David Byrne samples still shaking off the 70s-flavoured dust, smoothly transitioning into the encompassing bassweight of Millie and Andrea’s lush dubstep for the first drop of the mix. Sliding between his own compositions and those that inspire him, the plucks and piano of MGNS!’s Bullbeggar ring even more Four Tet-esque than Hebden himself a handful of tracks ago, letting the past and future of MGNS! take shape side by side.

MGNS! lets his own creations breathe and swell before skipping through the playful, staccato piano and subtly driving beat of Felix Rosch, showing his taste in 20C minimalist compositions with a dancefloor twist. Late 2010’s-era melancholic vocal chops and percussive bops feature in Pearson Sound (fka Ramadanman)’s end-of-the-night anthem ‘Don’t Change For Me’ and DJ Plead’s ‘Mercy’ in quick succession, before eventually grinding and lurching towards the gritty peak of the mix with full-on blasting breakbeat & bass destroyer, ‘black mouth’ by Shinra Knives. MGNS! flirts with pure uninhibited rave music, foraying into old-school slamming techno with the fat round kicks and syncopated claps of New York’s Ron Morelli - so good he played him thrice. But from driving acid techno and crunchy hats, MGNS quite characteristically pulls back, going deep with his own production’s spiralling synth lines. Whether eclectic wigginess from John G Perry, or the layering of Tangerine Dream or Kate Bush over spooky breakbeat, MGNS! keeps the ears pricked and fresh over the last arc of the mix. And just when you think it’s winding down, it somehow picks back up; when you think it’s dialling back, up it steps off into the abyss. 

Leapfrogging expectations with a touch of oddball flair, MGNS! both evades being put in a box and threads a surprisingly consistent patchwork - unpredictable, yet perfectly congruent. A mix to listen to in pitch darkness with good headphones, as stipulated by the DJ himself.
