DAMAGR - One by None

Through the train window the city unfolds like a story without chapters. The Yamanote Line, a perfect loop circling Tokyo, runs from dawn until after midnight—an endless rhythm carrying millions of footsteps through Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Ueno. Every 59 minutes or so the journey completes itself, only to begin again, clockwise or counter-clockwise, outer circle or inner circle.

Somewhere between Ōsaki and Shinagawa, between the precise intervals of two and four minutes, time begins to dissolve. The city passes by in fragments—neon reflections on glass, the hum of conversations, the quiet presence of strangers who may never meet again. Trains move on the left, just like the cars, as if reminding you that even loops have their own direction.

It is less a commute than a daydream: a meditation on repetition, on lives intersecting for the briefest of moments, on the idea that a circle has no end—only the promise of return.

	Just as a disclaimer: as far as ethics go when it comes to recording bands that play at The Apollo Bar, I have never given away, sold, or given a private concert to anybody without the explicit permission of the group and or artist first. This is a sacred trust which I have upheld since I started recording bands for my own personal archive about a decade ago. This is the one and only exception. 
	The reason I wanted people to hear this is because it is an essential archival recording of a brilliant young Canadian artist in the early stages of her career. I also would like to add that I do not profit off these recordings. They are free to anybody who is interested in them. All intellectual property belongs to Claire Elise Boucher. 
	Also, I will remove these recordings if I receive a cease and desist by her management. Hopefully it will not come to that.
	Grimes played The Apollo before her meteoric rise to fame only a short time afterwards. The concert took place August 10th, 2010. The other bands on the bill that night were Bad Fate, Pop Winds and Birthday Cakes. 
	Memory does not serve either Sheila or I very well that night. It was slow that night because August is traditionally crappy month for getting people out to see live music. It was also on a Tuesday, which is just a bad day in general for hosting events. 
	I think there may have been 5 people in the audience at the time Grimes played. She was the first act of the night. 
	Sheila and I remember her as being very quiet and polite. Compared to her extravagant light shows and costumes she would adopt after her rise to popularity, her show were stripped down and unadorned (which makes sense because touring in a van with a few other bands and having very little money does not lend itself to extravagant stage shows.) It was simply her on stage with a Roland sampler which she fed her vocal microphone into. Everyone in the audience was hypnotized by her ethereal music. 
	Sheila and I did not predict she would become so well-known, but it was an incredible sleeper kind of set, the kind of performance you do not notice at the time but haunts you for years to come (haunts you in the best way possible, the way all compelling music should.)
	Sheila saw Grimes on Last Call with Carson Daly in 2013 and the rest is history.

Having crushed the charts and elevated crowds online with Kronos, Hi-Lo now gets the remix treatment from the label boss man, Sian, and the extraordinary Tokyo based talent, Drunken Kong. Sian takes the mix into dark, 80's bassline territory, whipping from acid to euphoria in the drops. Drunken Kong give the track a sublime workout, adding a specialist aspect, and warping the original elements into a futuristic after-hours landscape.
