When organizing my mixes, I spend a lot of time developing a visual language to accompany my selections. Keeping in mind the visuality of these spaces, in the mix above I felt that it was important to include tracks that carry these theoretical/cultural components effortlessly. From sampling Jenn Nkiru’s short film Rebirth Is Necessary, to Fred Moten’s book Black and Blur, and my own and my contemporaries’ poetic interventions, this mix not only explores the ability to bend time, but also to recontextualize music. While staying committed to a climactic narrative, the mix elaborates on the fluidity between legacy, gender, and race. Throughout my practice as an artist as well as a DJ, I often think about remedy, and how the work I am a part of can be utilized in that sense. In Black to Techno, written and directed by Jenn Nkiru, Elijah Maja voices on Arthur Jafa’s theory of the dropout:

The dropout within techno and all other forms of Black musical composition speaks to the idea of the missing … On a deeper, deeper psychoanalytical level, what you’re essentially hearing is Black people creating a universe within which that rupture, that loss that we are missing is fixed. Forcing an awareness upon us of what has been removed then taken from us. The missing, that thing we’ll never find, never get back, never recover, it's speaking to that. The dropout is essentially a pulling away, an acknowledgment of a presence, an energy that has been removed from itself.

I argue that this gestural practice and intersection of Blackness, queerness, and transness works in tandem with what Eshun mentions: the conscientious notion of filling a rapture.

Ultimately, staying true to the elements that have established MORENXXX, I wanted to meddle in the harder side of techno (and trance), and centralize artists who are Black, queer, and/or trans—for example BEARCAT, TYGAPAW, Him Hun, Quest?nmarc, and DJ Hyperdrive—and blend them with legends like Robert Hood and Claude Young. All the while I’m incorporating tracks from WTCHCRFT, Xiorro, Estoc, and Ariel Zetina, who have been carrying on these legacies with enigmatic force.

E-Flux: Black Techno| Queer Rave MORENXXX

This set was originally performed at HÖR on January 6, 2023. Due to the HÖR's ambiguous stance, which enables oppressors through a 'both-sides' approach and the news of them restricting many DJs from expressing solidarity for Palestine, we requested its removal. The platform's position conflicted with our principles and political views. We have chosen to keep this set on our channel for our fans and the artists' songs that must be shared! - we put a lot of love in our DJ sets.

I (XAKALELE) remember having the craziest migraine that day, but it was cute nonetheless!

mobilegirl is a DJ and producer based in Berlin. Her style behind the booth focuses on creating a highly energetic dance floor that allows for emotionality, for softer moments but also attention-demanding breaks and shifts. An equally fun and challenging combination that gained her traction very early on in her career and established her as an artist to watch in experimental club music – bringing about tours across Europe, East Asia and North America and a spot on the roster of DISCWOMAN. 
Reflecting her general curiosity mobilegirl's inspirations draw from a broad pool that intentionally make her rather difficult to categorise. However, she has made a name for herself through club edits of R&B classics; a predilection for which draws through all of her work. Another influence, not less apparent, are video game scores. Her fascination with the repetitive and soothing effect of music in RPGs accordingly set the foundation for her debut EP "Poise" released in 2017 - a string of tracks that at that time seemed untypically mellow but were created in an effort to decelerate and invite the listener to do the same. This project turned mobilegirl's inspiration into praxis. It opened up the doors for her to shift her focus towards scores of films, art installations and fashion shows the years after, while remaining a force on the dance floor.

Peachlyfe’s productions and live-sets rebelliously weave across genres, trippy melodies cut with heavy slaps while slithering whispers in your ear sowing the dismantlement of the ‘cistem’. Their previous EP “All Tits are Real, All Money is Fake, All Hail Satan” is an ode to that anarchic-playfulness, a marvellous feat in blending rave-rush joy and queer defiance.

 For this Crystal Series, Peachlyfe carries all the longing for a dancefloor and threads a slow-burn moody trip. First, they set our mind on a loopy trance, bassy, steady, time-stretching rising steps. The mind inflammation then takes our limbs. Amidst this puppetry, with a sly-sudden release of the straps, Peachlyfe generates euphoria and unruly movements. Where did this smile on our faces come from? All of a sudden we are dancing.
