Wastland 002: Silent Chaos

This work was created to give voice to the so-called Pictish stones, carved stone balls dated from the late Neolithic to possibly as late as the Iron Age, mainly found in Scotland and over 400 in the Aberdeenshire. A wide range of theories have been produced to explain their use or significance, without any gaining wide acceptance. 
In this composition I imagined they would be ritualistic objects, used as keys to gain access to a magical multiverse. The used method is the one I call “sonic movie”: is a linear narration made of scenes and shots. It starts with a call from the dawn of time, throat singing voices open the cloud of time and transport the listener to an ancient daily routine on the banks of a stream and there’s a woman singing (in Celtic - I couldn’t find Pictish singings). Then something happens and the daily routine magically fades: the previous organic and random sounds start to have a rhythmic pattern and the voice is being convoluted into the river. The ritual of the mankind merging with nature is happening and the stones, as keys, start to open different worlds. Then a series of scenes follow one after another, with far voices coming and going, universes open up, at some point evil forces come in and the ritualistic music made with bells and drums block their way into our world. Then everything fades.
The used sound material ranges from field recordings of nature and voices - both convoluted into each other or with other samples, as a throat singing with a spieluhr, or various throat singing voices convoluted with roars of animals, meaning the ritualistic merge between humans and nature - to instruments samples and various kinds of synthesis, all effected in complex ways.

“MACRO” is the second, long due, part of the project “micro//MACRO”.
The music on “MACRO” is the evocation of archetypes buried in the collective unconscious, shown in a new emotional light. The use of electronic tools, such as modular synthesizers and electronic drums that control loops, samples and field recordings, offers to Silent Chaos a wide sound palette, from which Silent Chaos draw to define their personal stylistic framework. Each composition determines a special universe in which crop up echoes of musique concrete, choirs, tribal sounds, noise and ambient, in sound experiments that envelop and surprise even those not accustomed to listening to these genres.
The album “MACRO” is the mature fruit of a years of A/V concerts, theatre and radio performances, rehearsals and recording sessions, which, through felt and suffered selections, finally reveals a pleasant surprise even for the artists themselves and it expresses the maximum potential amount of the moment’s intuitions, chosen to represent the best of their research work. Listening to “MACRO” demands special attention, to immerse deeply in the particular atmosphere of each song evoked by the musicians; an attention that has been lost in this era of rapid artistic consumption, and against which the Silent Chaos are fighting, offering another vision of the moment that anyone, if he wants, can gaze into and share.
“MACRO” is the story of a journey, the one that takes the spirit from the Microcosm (as in the album “micro”) – where is staged the destruction of the worldly self that allows access to the Mystery – to the Macrocosm, in which, recognized the self and the world limits, the Intellect is pushed toward unknown horizons, with the terrible and sublime purpose of making the deconstruction of the Whole, to finally reconstitute itself as a primordial Adam.

The inner battles are the most difficult to fight, and at the end, only if you know your enemy you are going to win.

The intelligent swarm has to be conducted and the conductor doesn’t always know how to keep the baton in his hand; with the result that the expression of that so valuable intellect is likely to get lost in mass confusion.

Absurd, all-encompassing and devoid of empathy; for the machine to be no further epilogue desirable that the fall in a deep inhuman abyss.

5 – Winterland 06:25
Crystallized wishes in an untenable icy stasis. The limbo of thought, where echoes of distant bells, calling to awakening thaw, resonate.

6 – Adonai’s Calling – The Hail of God 07:28
Flashes of pure light in the blanket of indifference, all wrapping and nothing leaking. Waves of a new consciousness on old beaches of arid intentions. The end and the new beginning of the journey.
