*the pre launch chatter is used allegorically to underline the guy checking every last detail before he talks to "the girl" about his feelings i.e. instead of the various flight engineers reporting status prior to launch to the flight director as in the NASA recording the guy is saying to himself...Nose hair - check, Deodorant - check, Breath - check etc etc etc...oh and it reinforces the spacy theme too!
