here comes the last of the three works on ‘retrospective future’.

background: as alarming as the scenarios are that scientists predict for the year 2100 if there is no rapid change in the way we treat our environment, this future still feels like abstract sci-fi, just beyond our imagination – more than twice as far away as the year 2001 was when kubrick's ‘a space odyssey’ came out.

but then, we watch our granddaughter, who just turned three, riding her scooter, screaming with joy. we realize how incredibly quickly time has passed since we were her age. and we have to think that in 2100, she will be only slightly older than we are today. and suddenly, 2100 becomes just one heartbeat away, an infinitely sad one.

I wrote 'scooting aleece' which originally dealt with a wild friend of us 40 years ago and we loved singing it at our all-night parties for two, albeit with different lyrics. recently, I rewrote the lyrics as a dedication to our granddaughter for the reasons mentioned above. to her and to all other kids her age.

while working on the AI vocals for the original 4/4 arrangement, for some reason I kept hearing a 3/4 beat in my head, which completely turned the entire compositional concept on its head. so, after creating the first version, which was faithful to the original, I created a second one that was completely different. and because it also featured a vocal premiere, I’d like to share this second version first. the first one will come later, if anyone is interested.

The executioner has come to cut thee down.
I know not for what crime.
The human race needs living space
And you have little time.

No counsel for your defence
No witness to your beauty
No guardian of your civil rights
It matters not - you're guilty!

Where are the lovers you shaded
When summer hearts were wed
Speak now for your leafy friend
Before his life is shed

Did no one see you in Springtime

Did no one pass last Autumn

The humans are coming fast

23 February 1975
Bill says, " A considerable time had lapsed since I had written any poetry probably due to the shock of my heart attack. In fact I was not sure whether I could still do so. It was a great comfort to me therefore to achieve this poem after an elapse of nearly five years.
The theme of civil rights comes from the northern troubles. I got the idea while out for a walk around Silverpine, the lovely little roads now sadly changed by housing development. Many lovely old trees cut down while others await their fate with 'Security' and 'Acquired' boards ignominiously nailed to them.
The last verse is a lesson on how we can co-operate to save the situation by planting a new tree"

Bill lived for nine more years after writing those words. It's interesting how the health shock effected his creativity and so nice he re-found it. Maybe a nice reminder to use our time well 🔆


I really love the third stanza. "Where are the lovers you shaded?..." Bill is looking at these condemned trees and wondering about the beautiful unconditional love it showed to people who are now no where to be seen when the trees need them. For me this wraps up what I've learned and had confirmed from Papa's poetry. Humans use the planet but get lost in our own pleasure and forget about what actually keeps us alive and what makes this such a wonderful planet to be on and that we do get to share. We share it with all the trees and eachother. We are however the only ones with either the intelligence to save it from ourselves or stay blinded and condemn it like these trees were condemned to their doom. Thanks Papa


This in my opinion is why laws against single use plastics and similar environmental saviours are so important. When idiosy decides to reverse them on a whim and because of only economics the indifference grows collectively and we lose our focus on the tree and the system as a whole. We then also forget that in focusing on the welfare of the tree, we focus on our own welfare. It's easy to forget this when we don't experience a direct relatable suffering however compassion towards the system still has our answers to a smoother future along side our dear tree friends 🫛
