Far from the Techno capitals of Europe, Azim Fathi has been carving out a niche for electronic music in his Iranian homeland for years. His love of sound has given birth to Paraffin, a record label and event series pioneering the very best of Persian talent. Faced with a raft of government restrictions and foreign sanctions which would make many a promoter balk, passion is fuel to Fathi’s mission to bring people together. For Podcast 101, he gives us a glimpse into Tehran’s electronic underground: stripped down, contemplative and dreamy.

FrixXxion 008: Command Control

Born in 1986, Darko Kolar is a Serbian electronic music artist. An electronic activist since his teenage years, music has always been his driving force. Before 2005, he collected techno, electro, breakbeat, and IDM records. You might recognize him as one half of Serbia’s industrial techno and rhythmic noise duo, Ontal, with Boris Brenecki. He also produces solo material as Katran and is part of Impulse Control with Brenecki and New York’s Blush Response.

Darko founded and runs the labels Jezgro and Ontal Series, both representing the darker and more experimental side of electronic music. Based in Subotica, Serbia, his career began in the mid-2000s, releasing material as Dekode on various record labels, alongside prominent artists like Si Begg, Silicon Scally and Radioactive Man. In 2011, he formed Ontal with Brenecki, releasing their debut EP, Output, on Darkfloor Sound. This led to numerous releases on labels like Ad Noiseam, HANDS, Overdraw, and Horo.

Parallel to Ontal, Darko developed his solo project, Katran, known for its dark and intense sound. In 2016, he launched the label Jezgro, debuting with Huren’s project MRTVI and followed by Japanese noise artist Merzbow. Jezgro focuses on the obscure, dark, and unstructured facets of electronic music, blending extreme and experimental genres like harsh noise, drone, industrial, rhythmic noise, and offbeat techno.

Katran - Dubine Podcast #048

Here is the recording of my recent set at UMI club in Brussels (10/31/24). I took immense pleasure in crafting this 3-hour warm-up ahead of @man-outta-space and @lauracharlier. My aim was to immerse the club into the dark recesses of what Freud described as ‘Worrying strangeness’: that hidden strangeness within us all, an unfathomable mystique that shadows our existence. From this natural mystique, I sought to guide the audience through the deepest club sounds of techno, rooted in the resonances of Detroit and infused with low-end basses, adding layers of depth and reverberating intensity.
