The Pig Push was first written by Cathal Mac Dubhghaill in 1918 to celebrate the work of Diarmuid Lynch. He'd been set up as Food Commissioner by Sinn Fein and had stopped a shipment of pigs out of the country. He stole the pigs, butchered them and distributed the meat among the Dublin natives. 

He was then promptly arrested, but his actions gained Sinn Fein a lot of goodwill with the people and this song was written to celebrate the deed.
