Approached for a tune I was, with the intent to raise money to help out people in Nepal who have been affected by the earthquake. Simply put, “Refraction Point” is a full-on auric assault on the senses and the physical body. The massive oscillating basslines, the intricately constructed extraterrestrial atmospheres, and the utterly dumbfounding drum patterns that weave betwixt growling glitch. The compositions almost literally speak for themselves, and truly have a mind of their own. This expressively psychedelic monstrosity of sound is a seminal piece for Berkeley, California’s Ben Wyss, known to the interplanetary creatures that fall victim to vibrations as Sixis. It’s been almost three years since the producer has released a full project, and the dedication and devotion that was poured into releasing this one is instantly evident.

“Refraction Point” is critical mass for Sixis. This is a journey through the cerebral caverns of a producer’s mind who is only just beginning to make his mark on music. The extensively thought-provoking ingenuity of each track and the outright dynamism and ebullience that drives each song to its conclusion is almost staggering. This EP from start to finish is a cosmic catastrophe, and that is meant in the most positive way possible.

Itay KUKAN DUB LAGAN is bringing some sunshine for smiling people into the first edition of a new radiOzora show, the Sofa Beats series with a special mix following the talk.

KUKAN-DUB-LAGAN is the project of Itay Berger. Itay is 40 years old, located in Barcelona, Spain. He has been listening and playing electronic music since he was 16 years old. He spent over 3 years working as a sound engineer in one of the top sound and light companies in Israel.
His decision to make music was strongly influenced by his trip to Ibiza in 1997-8. At that time he also started to preform in Israel and abroad at mostly underground parties. Itay's general musical influences are wide-ranging. His journey into chill-out djing started in 2002 in Israel. During that time he was also signed by a UK techno-house label (www.klubdj.co.uk) under the name DJ Itay for a year and flew to Japan to play at parties in Osaka and Kyoto. Returning back to Israel, he enrolled to sound engineering college for one year and totally committed himself to music composition. Drawing from his djing experience, his early family musical influences as well as his own musical background he created his chill-out project: KUKAN-DUB-LAGAN.

Erratic Patterns

To celebrate the end of our 20th anniversary tour, we'd like to share with you this live recording of our show closer 'Lost in (Bird) Soul)'.

An unholy alliance between 'Lost in Translation' (from 'Ape to Angel') and 'Bird Soul' (from 'Rude Mechanicals'), the track was born when we were working out the tunes we wanted to play on the tour and found that the two originals segued well. We played around a bit, and were very happy to find we could do more than segue - we could actually merge the two into one. From there, the live process took over and new elements were added and old ones removed, and a suitable end to the 20th anniversary tour set was born.

It proved to be an excellent set closer as we could tease out the riffs and rinse out the drums and bass for a superbly long time. We both love drum and bass, so it was also good to end a set that began in dub with d'n'b beats.

We recorded all the shows of the tour, but this recording from OZORA Festival in Hungary stood out the best. We are very grateful to Marton, Agnes and the crew for looking after us and to the audience for creating such an awesome atmosphere.

For the spotters, Steve Barrow utters the line "and the treble will be sharp, sharp like a knife, and the bass and drum will be heavy" and 2 Many DJs provide the closing "the dub echoes go as far as the machine lets you go, that's as far as it goes".
