QUITTING TIME - TYLOR ROSE

This track starts with an arpeggio progression in B Major (B - E - D#m - B to Bb.)  It quickly slides into Eb Major by turning the last arp to Bb midway through the arpeggio.  It stays in Eb for 16 bars using the chords Eb - Ab - Db - Cm until setting up for a modulation into A Major by substituting the Cm chord for an Emaj7 chord on the last play through.  In hindsight an E7 probably would've worked better though.  On the bass, I pluck the low E and a D# on the A-string to mimic the Emaj7 sound.  After a quick 8 bars in A Major,(Amaj7 - A - D - Dsus4 - Amaj7 - A) the second progression ends on a B chord instead of the A and this sets us up nicely to land back in B major.

We begin in B with arpeggios again (B - E - D#m - B.)  These are stretched out to last 8 bars, unlike the rest of the progressions in the song which are only four..  It has a way of slowing the song down a bit and quieting things even more during the already peaceful arpeggios.  After the arps, there are two plays of the same progression, only with a different arpeggio/chord hybrid style and each progression only lasting the usual 4 bars.  On the last time thru the progression, we end on the dominant Bb(the 5th in Eb Major) instead of B to guide us back into good old Eb Major, my favorite key.

The ending to this song is one of my favorite endings that I've composed.  The lead guitar seems like it is going to rest on the Bb (13th fret.) But then at the last second slides a half step up to B and holds that tone through the end of the track (the bass also plays this B note softly too, for added emphasis.)  This probably sounds cool because I used Bb throughout the song to modulate back into Eb Major, but the ending (and the beginning arpeggio) are in B Major.  So when I slide up to B I am actually sliding back onto home, instead of staying on Bb and preparing to modulate again.  Maybe this is what the ear is trying to decide, what's going to happen next?  But the song ends, in B major, no more modulation after all.  I don't know, I'm tired and over-thinking probably.  I'm just trying to figure out why playing the home note a half-step off and sliding into home has such a pleasing effect.  It has something to do with all the times I used Bb in the song to modulate; I'm pretty sure of that.  Plus, I did use B a couple of times to modulate from A Major back into the key of B and one time going from Eb back to B Major as well.
