The singing  worms chooses an eco-acoustic observation of the soil in order to examine the impact of different anthropic disturbances: chemical inputs, industrial waste, heavy metals, noise pollution, etc. on the biodiversity of the Hauts-de-France region.

This work, carried out between April and November 2019, takes the form of an art and science collaboration. Although it relies on readings from partner laboratories and is inspired by a scientific protocol research , it does not seek demonstration. Rather, it offers bridges between these disciplines in order to arouse reciprocal curiosities, to inspire deviations from supposed norms and, perhaps, somewhere, to contribute to advancing the path of thought.

Le chant des vers - Binaural version

This multi-channel sound, video and photographic installation exposes my research and conjectures of 19th century migration in Bolivia of my Italian grand-grandfather, Domenico Lorini, a fighter who was part of Garibaldi’s red shirts (the army that united Italy), but especially a scientist who was very early interested in the healing properties of the medicinal plants of the «New World» including Coca. From this plant he managed to extract an elixir that could still be widely consumed today.

The sound work is accompanied by video projections and experimental slides presenting various documents found during my research in Rome, Milan, Genoa and Venice during the résidence Wicar (Wicar art residency).  I opt for speech and sounds as a way of orality, that is still very present in some communities in South America and which I think as a very effective and sensitive way of connecting us to the past. The image and the sound are closely related in this work. While images arouse reverie, sound composition seeks to transport us in space and time. As a result, the moving image, finally moves very little although, while the sound composition circulates freely throughout the space occupied by the installation.

“Je suis née de la mer” is an open window to an imperceptible, fascinating, delicate world, so essential but knowingly ignored. It is also a tribute to the women and men, poets or scientists, who, like Michelet, Vannier, Grall, Eluard, and many others, cast a curious and original gaze upon the world, enabling us to sometimes love it, become aware of it, and recognize it.

Je suis née de la mer

This sculptural and sound installation invites us to immerse ourselves in the Amazon rainforest, filled with sounds, scents, textures, spirits, and life. Yet, capitalism has declared war on it through illegal logging, deforestation caused by livestock production and monocultures, as well as illegal gold mining, which pollutes freshwater sources. Climate change, of course, presents another invisible threat. Tropical forests are ceasing to be rainforests due to the loss of millions of trees that once kept the air moist. The water cycle is damaged and is further broken by violent, human-caused fires, which kill millions of plant and animal species each year.

In the end, what will remain? The disappearance of life, and with it, only a deep and empty silence.

Inmobilis

In this sound installation, four speakers attached to metallic shafts seem to immerge from the ground as if to impose themselves upon the visitor. They stream a musical composition made of biophonic activities recorded in the soils of spoil tips 11/19 and their surroundings in Loos-en-Gohelle, North of France. These sounds express the loss of biodiversity caused by soil pollution but also the transformation undergone by the natural ecosystems as a result of human activity which all too often totally ignores life’s equilibrium.

El espíritu del alba

I was born in La Paz, an acrobatic capital perched nearly 4,000 meters above sea level, on a slope of the Bolivian altiplano, where, in the heart of the Andes, the mountain range plunges suddenly toward the Amazon plains. It is a mineral place where withered vegetation struggles to extract life from the rock and stubbornly clings to existence in a clay soil dried out by the sun, under the impassive gaze of the imposing glaciers that stand guard: Illimani, Mururata, and Huayna Potosí. Paradoxically, it is also a fertile crucible of traditions, rituals, and festivals, where offerings are made to Pachamama, and the Ch’alla is performed to bless cars, homes, and businesses every year during carnival. It is both this syncretism and the splendor of nature that inspire my artistic approach today.

My work thus focuses on the relationship between humans and nature, on the interactions between humans and non-humans, and on the question of shared territory that arises from this. Often the result of interdisciplinary collaborations, my works invite us to challenge our anthropocentric paradigm, to perceive the world around us differently, to rethink our relationship with living beings, and to regain the ability to value what is often seen as insignificant.

As also an architect, I enjoy working with spaces, dimensions, and light, staging them in sculptural installations. At the same time, I place great emphasis on sound in my works, which, by engaging the sense of hearing, allows entry into a more immediate and sensory dimension, distancing us from the primarily analytical and thoughtful approach of sight. I like to mix technology with natural or recycled materials in my creations. Curious about nature’s relationship with time, I often subject these materials to biological and chemical processes of alteration and decomposition to bring out visual or auditory textures that testify to the perpetual renewal of life.
