This story started long before Ghost Penn had a name.
In 2010, for a computer science class project, Chris Pennington wrote and produced an instrumental track as background to a presentation on theoretical physics. It carried a mission briefing, a rescue scenario, and a desperate voice calling out into static. At the time, it was just background music — but it became a beacon, a seed that would later grow into Ghost Penn.

Major Tom’s Beacon bridges the gap between David Bowie’s Space Oddity and Peter Schilling’s Major Tom (Coming Home) — two cultural landmarks that told the story of the same astronaut from different ends of the journey. Bowie left Major Tom drifting in silence, a tragic figure lost to the void. Schilling later imagined his transmission breaking through again, declaring he was “coming home.”

Ghost Penn evolves that lineage. Major Tom’s Beacon reframes the myth through Penn’s voice — a recovery pilot sent decades later to follow the reactivated signal, trace the coordinates, and attempt the rescue. In doing so, the track doesn’t just honor Bowie and Schilling — it extends the narrative into Ghost Penn’s haunted world of static, transmissions, and voices from the unknown.
