'A chantar m'er de so qu'ieu non volria' (‘I must sing a song I'd rather not’)is a song by the troibaritz Beatriz de Dia (c.1175-c.1225). The singer is a betrayed lover, but the song is about more than that; it tells us what it’s like to be compelled to speak out when you don’t want to. This version is completely improvised over the basic melody.

Bulbul. Nightingale. The migrating bird, suspended between skies: never home, always on her way there. The bird who sings to the rose, the soul that yearns for the divine. The bird who suffers injustice and is given a new tongue. This album takes inspiration from the stories of the nightingale to imagine different ways they might sound through the recorder. The proximity of birdsong to the sound of the recorder is evident, yet here I use it to push at the boundaries of how the recorder is meant to sound; the stories it is meant to tell, the histories it is meant to embody.

I love this piece, because it can be both a children's song and a way to sing of/for imprisoned and fleeing people everywhere:

A little bird showed up at my window
And said, “Nounou,
Hide me in your place
I beg you, nounou.”

“Where are you from?”
“From the limits of the sky.”
“Where did you come from?”
“From the neighbor’s house.”

“What are you scared of?”
“From the cage I fled from.”
“Where are your feathers?”
“Time wasted them.”

A tear ran down his cheek,
And his wings were folded.
Walking on the ground he said,
I want to walk but I can't.

I hugged him to my chest then,
His wounds started hurting him.
Right before he fled the cage,
His voice and his wings were broken.

“Look, don’t be afraid!
See: the sun will soon rise!”
And he looked over the trees and saw
The waves of freedom shining.

He saw wings fluttering
Behind the gates of the hill,
And he saw the trees shimmering
On top of wings of freedom.
