"Song Of The Sunken Sister" (Psychedelic Ballad) [Themed]

r/SongAWeek Submissions week 48 - Theme: The Sea

This is a tune about the waves of sadness and conviction which ebb and flow over me when contemplating gender and body dysmorphia. 

My name is 'Morgan' and I was raised by a single mother surrounded by 4 sisters. Morgan means 'of the water' and is itself suited to gender fluidity, given it's place on the mantle of either sex. 

This song captures the angst which wells inside of me when I grapple with my sexuality and gender and seeks to give the sister which is sunken inside of me her own voice to speak; this is something I do in my tunes often but rarely so explicitly. 

The rhythm is meant to evoke the lapping waves of the sea, thus the theme emanates throughout it.

Song Of The Sunken Sister

The Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) is a strong ocean current that flows through the islands of Indonesia. In the local language this is "Arus Lintas Indonesia". In some places, the current funnels as much water as is contained in all Earth's rivers through narrow channels between islands, creating powerful eddies and whirlpools. I came across this on a recent David Attenborough wildlife documentary!

Music wise this track is all over the place - it's probably rooted in the 80s but with some more modern industrial-type sounds in there, and some elements of House and SynthWave. Definitely more EDM/dancey then my usual fare.

Apart from the drum machine all sounds come from Rigid Audio Kontakt plugin presets, acquired during their closing down sale.

Arus Lintas

It's become a little tradition of mine that, whenever Christmas is at the door, I pick a well known and beloved (and often happy) Christmas tune, and I twist it around to turn it into something darker, slightly evil, and definitely more metal. This year, a friend came up with the suggestion to have a look at "Carol of the Bells", which is how this short and "sweet" tune came out. Hopefully I'll soon have enough of these tracks to put a Christmas EP out. Happy holidays!

As usual, everything was written and recorded using open source and free tools: Ardour, MuseScore, Hydrogen/DrumGizmo (MuldjordKit), sfizz, Calf, DragonFly Reverb, Virtual Playing Orchestra and others. All guitars were recorded using my POD X3 Live instead.
