This one is all about making music which structure is too intricate, and especially too fast, for any performers to ever play it. I might have made it insanely faster, i know, but I wanted to keep it musical also. It ain't even actually faster than Lubomyr Melnyk, according to this video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4P4SfNXocw, who can play 19 notes per second while concert pianists are generally known to be able to reach 14 notes per second. Since this is probably non-repeated notes (which are harder to play fast because you can't move the same finger "at the same time") he couldn't manage to play my track... As you can see in some places in the note chart, symmetric note patterns are sometimes used, which are also recognizable using just your ears...

My first microtonal track done using FL Studio 12; nothing too fancy for the moment... It uses a 7limit scale that has the degrees of the 5th mode of harmonic minor, plus a major third. The ratios are 1:1 - 15:14 - 6:5 + a syntonic comma - 9:7 - 4:3 - 32:21 - 8:5 - 16:9 - 40:21 - 2:1. The improvisation track has been quantized cause I don't quite play 16ths always on beat; i just like to try harder than I should when I play keyboard, while I haven't went too apeshit while playing that one...

Gypsum

If you like long stringed chord progressions that don't come back to any particular structure and melodies that alternate from tensed to resolved, that one's for you!

Starts out with a mixture of tensed and more harmonic chords, then goes into a succession of tensed ones around 1:20 (at some point the top note rises by a "semi-tone" 9 times in a row), then the real bliss is at 2:00.

57 chords and I could only track a few that come back more than once; rather than focusing on which scale I'm in, I composed based on how each chord flavor feels, and their structures. Let's face it, any 3-chord song out there hopefully has a more complex chordal rhythm than this; just plain bars every time, 65bmp... I tried to put emphasis on the harmony here, which is the part of music that gets me the most.

Scale : Mostly natural temperament shifted by 225/224 (7.71cents) in the direction making it as far as possible from 12tet, but at the same time not too far from just temperament. The reason for equally spacing each interval from its natural equivalent is that it yields timber vibrations that beat match (in a poly-rhythmic manner, but this happens fast), giving a cleaner sound than if not... Of course this is only when 1/1 is sounded; things happen otherwise between other notes, but that's the idea. You can take the time to calculate in hertz if you wish, which I won't do here...

Imperfect Bliss

I took the "lead" I added over Trance[]Control's "This is my house" and made it microtonal, 53EDO specifically. Many elements are similar to those of This is my House : the continuous C-C#-A#-C bass line, bass hit on offbeats, general song structure (a few figures i liked were repeated more often here than in my original remix).

It took forever to microtune each note one by one in FL Studio 12 (well over 2000 notes), but this is probably the last time I'm doing that much notes by hand, as I'm now moving towards new means or productions, more suitable for microtonal work...

Note that I do not oppose myself to imperialism as a worldwide established strength, but rather to the side effects it might have on some people's daily lives... The little green guy and the kitty in the image are stuff I found on the ground, probably lost of discarded by children. Yeah, I still earn stuff off the ground at my age...

Imperialism Impossible

My first piece made using microtonal-friendly synth IVOR2; 3 sounds used out of 4 are my own, designed with IVOR2 and boosted with FL Studio's mixer. The sound textures may be a little less dense than with other synths, yet the ease of choosing what tuning you want, and especially the possibility to tune the partials to your scale, plenty compensate for it, both production and result-wise...

Nocturnal Impulse

My 7th microtonal track, and probably my favorite yet :D I had the "chorus" melody in mind since 2005 or so, when I was still hanging in raves...

I returned to placing every note's pitch by hand for this one. The "duck trumpet" sound, as well as a sound which is part of a balloon's sound slowly unblowing when pinched with fingers, make the track particular... What I love about 53EDO is that the steps are so close you can give any note the exact desired feel...

I had my first keyboard at 14 years old. I remember finding out about the concept of chords by randomly spreading out my 3 first fingers on 3 white notes with 1 white note in between not being pressed... wow! 

Then later came the interrogation, from a friend of mine, of why "the sound made when playing a chord (it was major or minor) kind of varies slowly over time...

A few years later, when I was in college, my friend who studied in electronics gave me a sheet with every 432Hz-convention's notes' frequencies in Hz. Looking at it I would notice that there seems to be simple fractions approximated by the frequencies of a major chord (by then I've gotten familiar with all 3 & 4-note chords).

Following my observations, I would then come up with the idea of making music made of notes that would be 4/3, 5/3, 5/4, 6/4, 7/4, 6/5, 7/5, 8/5, and 9/5. Mind you; I wasn't aware that the notes chosen would resemble that which I already used before on a 12Tet keyboard, 7/4 being the farthest my experiments would get me from what we get to play on a regular keyboard. I was still young, and did not even remotely considered to come to the fact that this is what harmony is actually based on.

It was only in 2011, like 13 years later, than I would one night find out about what Just Intonation is, and realize my old idea of using ratios to tune notes wasn't an original, Machiavellian, super-mastermind plan.

About 5 other years passed, before one day I purchased a new keyboard which came with Ableton Live software. I would then use that to make improvisation tracks over popular songs. It took about another year before I started producing microtonal music using FL Studio.

For 21 years I have carried my desire to make my own music without actually doing anything else than talking (and thinking) about it, like a friend of mine once pointed me out after I shared my ideas on "what I'll do when I'll make music". Better late than never...
