God this analysis is insane. I have thought quite a bit about Spartacus and his legacy, but not that leftists would cancel him. Look back over a century and you will find bourgeois historians "fact-checking" communists who used him as a hero. Like it ain't the left canceling him, libs have been "um aktually"ing him since forever. They love to act like he is not a good example because he was not literally a communist, which is something no leftist criticizes him or any ancient figure for because our view of history is one of development. Marxism is contingent on history needing to develop and produce people and moments to overthrow the given dominant class.

Also this author treats Spartacus as a symbol of Rome being cool or good. Literally the reason we know about him is because he hated Rome and fought against it. We idealize him for his opposition to Rome

And another thing, the author treats the film as if it is what embodies the leftist vision of Spartacus. The film came out a century after Marx and decades after Luxemburg, it had no fucking relevance to creating how leftists view the figure. Hell if you want examples of blatantly leftist works look to Brecht's play on Spartacus, or to older works that inspired Rosa.
