Time is always speeding up. I feel like we just came out of the New Year's celebration, but the truth is, we are a whole quarter done with 2024. It's time to take a break and possibly slow down. I'll be off for a couple of weeks, recharging my batteries somewhere on the coast of France, but before I leave, I've got one more exciting track premiere to share with you today. This one is courtesy of French producer Maxime Dangles, who previously showed up here with a Pavane Remix of his "Operate" back in 2023. I liked the pure energy and musicality of that piece, and I was excited to preview his upcoming new full-length, titled Le Roman De Carpentier, which the French National Cinema Center commissioned as a soundtrack for the 1913 silent film celebrating the first French boxing world champion. Turning to his arsenal of modular synthesizers and club gear, Dangles focused on blending a perfect balance between ambient, electronica and techno across the twelve tracks on the album. The result, full of excitement and, once again, raw energy and grit, is what has genuinely drawn my attention to some of the pieces here, especially the ambient composition titled "Papa", this being Headphone Commute and all...

A Temporal Journey Through Daydreams and Nostalgia...

Dreamu, the alias of Madrid-based experimental musician and producer Fran Sarró, presents nrem, his debut album, a 13-track instrumental LP. Inspired by the N-REM (non-rapid eye movement) N1 sleep phase - the transitional state between wakefulness and sleep where reality begins to blur into dreamlike images - nrem delves into this liminal space. Dreamu's landscape is colored by the melancholy of an idealized past that never existed.

The album, recorded primarily on reel-to-reel tape machines and cassettes, employs techniques such as reversed sounds, tape speed changes, and granular synthesis. Its palette is built from processed electric guitars, pianos, samplers, and field recordings.

nrem is the result of a decade-long journey of personal and sonic exploration, crafted within the intimate space of his home studio in Madrid. Surrounded by cables, effect pedals, and tape machines, Dreamu sketched harmonies and textures while navigating an emotional evolution marked by ups and downs, insecurities, and expectations. Composing became a refuge, where those feelings could crystallize into sounds that honestly reflected his vision.

Di Rosa belongs to those authentic musicians who have tackled the vast field of action offered by the genre from a theoretical basis, aiming above all at an aesthetic verification of means and instruments dictated by concrete experience. In his case, it is difficult to take into account reference models since everything materialises after understanding the potential of keyboards, synthesisers and software for manipulating acoustic signals, a research that is then transferred into completely improvised sounds, plots and textures. With his music, Di Rosa tries to document the 'experience', the feelings and relationships that the environment (understood in a broader sense than the natural environment) provides us with. 

In the tracks of 'I want to hear and see everything' there is a further aspect to be taken into account, namely his geographical origin, since the sound material used is the result of a meditated elaboration on the specificities of the Sicilian territory, particularly that of Ragusa, during a live performance to celebrate the writer Gesualdo Bufalino: In concrete terms, Di Rosa's profound thoughts turn to the paintings of Piero Guccione, an artist who worked magnificently on the optical density of lines, shadows and representations, allowing for a visual level of detail capable of providing an inimitable interplay between presence and rarefaction; the 'confusion' of elements was most evident in the paintings of the sea, where Guccione infused a fabulous atmospheric intent, managing to create an indistinct visual 'mass' capable of making us imagine even what is not in the painting. 

Undoubtedly, Guccione could be a pictorial reference for a good slice of ambient musicians of the last two decades, who have based their expressive power on the 'confusion' of real and instrumental sounds, with the aim of restoring images that linger in the memory for a few seconds and then give way to other images of a different calibre. The music of 'I want to hear and see everything' tends towards the same evocative idioms, it is constructed with interventions that want to arouse those prophetic densities, a contracted lyricism that technically feeds on a mix that contains within it loops, wide synth openings, granulations, sculpture sounds, fragments of vocal field recordings, irregular downtempo music, electrical short circuits and coherent responses to the processuality of digital signals (Di Rosa uses the DSP of ppooll immersed in Max/MSP). 

As Hippolyte Taine warned in his essay 'On Intelligence', images appear and disappear, come into conflict with our ideas, take us back to a strange world of addictions: imagination is therefore a powerful distributor of positivity and negativity of contexts, and this justifies the 'roughness' that Di Rosa often places alongside the trance of sounds: the visions and complexities of his land are found intact in another dimension, they are those little mysteries that stud Guccione's calm and absolute paintings of the seas, which make us navigate between seductions and truths.
