'A Love Letter to Braindance'
A continuous mix in three parts.

“This mix is a labour of love to highlight a sound that has been hugely inspiring for me and my music. 'Braindance', 'IDM', 'electronica' - whatever you want to call it. I personally like the term 'braindance', not just because it was coined by Rephlex Records, of whom I'm a huge fan, but because I feel it nicely sums up the sound. 'IDM' and 'electronica' are too clinical and limiting but 'braindance' feels open and playful. Though, for me, all the best tracks of this ilk are 'brain-and-heart-dance' - the emotional impact being why I love this music and keep coming back to it. 

This mix is made up mostly of sounds of the late 90's / early 00's, tracks I loved when I was coming, but also includes some recent tracks that are indebted to the 'braindance' sound and idea. It is a continuous mix but split into three parts, conceptually, each covering a different aspect of the sound.”

Fans of Clark rejoiced when he announced the release of his self-titled album in September. 

His seventh in total - the first being 'Clarence Park' in 2001 - the Berlin-based producer once again steps out for the Warp Records team with an LP teeming with abrasive textures and brutal beats, yet still leaving space for glowing melodies and harmonious synth calls. 'Winter Linn' rattles hard like a pneumatic drill, while 'The Grit In The Pearl' encapsulates its title perfectly, finding a balance between rugged kicks and shining, eyes-wide-open euphoria.

The Uni series began when Alva Noto was booked to play live at the club UNIT in Tokyo, and had to adapt his sound accordingly for that environment.

‘UNIEQAV’ follows-on from and develops the concept of Alva Noto’s ‘Unitxt’ and ‘Univrs’ albums, and completes the third part in the trilogy, whereby each record is both unique and part of the bigger picture. This is also mirrored in the artwork for each release, which when combined form a triptych spelling ‘Uni’.

Described by Carsten as “sonically representing an underwater dive”, the gleaming ‘UNIEQAV’ brings as usual an inherent artistic, conceptual and scientific depth. Mathematics, data, unit systems, grids, rhythms, codes, text, language, spoken word, DNA, science technology and nature are all utilised, for both inspiration and execution.  

As with the last two Uni releases, the French sound poet Anne-James Chaton collaborates here, on ‘Uni Dna’. Where on previous records Chaton first provided a vocal track to which Nicolai composed, this time the duo flipped it; the poet wrote for an existing track, adding his unique vocal approach to recite amino acids that constitute the DNA molecule.

Regarding Carsten’s interest in 3D sound design and building sonic spaces, ‘UNIEQAV’ transports the listener to a modern, spacious and zen-like place for meditative movement. But conversely the album works equally well in a dark club - as for every glistening digital spark and simple, emotive melody - there’s a stealthy bassline, frenetic drum pattern and colossal low-end thump.

Manchester's Skam Records have earned something of a cult status over the last 30 years. Helmed by Andy Maddocks, the label has become synonymous with names like Gescom, Jega and Shadow Huntaz and built a huge family of producers who've returned to release on the imprint time and time again.

In the latter half of the 90s they became one the first labels to sign Boards of Canada and go on to release two of their early EPs; Hi Scores in '96 and Aquarius in '98. More recent movements have seen Skam keep it local, including Afrodeutsche's celebrated debut in 2018 and a second 12" from North Manc Beds, while last month saw the release of a They Can't Be Saved, a new album from James Ruskin & Mark Broom's Fear Ratio project.

Off the back of the release, Andy takes the reigns for today's mix to give us a taste of the label, past and present...
