This week's guest is Sam Shelley, a DJ who immerses himself in Funk, Soul and Disco. I am a regular listener to his own show on NDC Radio, and I was blown away by his extensive repertoire of original tracks from the 70s, mixed in effortlessly with a few modern disco edits. His extensive BIO is below, and it's a pleasure to welcome him to the show

** BIO **
Sam Shelley is London based Music Producer & DJ focusing mainly on the Disco, Funk & Soul genres. He has loved music from a very young age and his first musical interaction in life was with the dance genre, as a child growing up he was influenced by his Mum’s Disco collection. She’s was a Disco girl back in its late 70s heyday going to many of the great London night spots and even once going to the famous Studio 54. His late Dad passed down his love for the Funk & Jazz-funk side of things, his Dads collection included people like Donald Byrd and Curtis Mayfield.

He loves playing tracks from the Disco, Boogie, Funk, Jazz-funk, Brit-funk & Soul genres, his favourite artists include people like Chic, (featuring Nile Rodgers a very big hero of his and a real inspiration who has influenced a lot of the sounds you hear in his productions today) Earth, Wind & Fire and Donald Byrd.

Sam started playing around with production in 2011 and had his first official release 5 years later in 2016. Within those 5 years he also got into DJing and has his first gig in 2015 at Proud Camden. Since then he has played many venues across London including Cafe 1001, Lightbox, The Scotch Of St James, Egg and the Ministry Of Sound.

Last year he got to play in Amsterdam with his NDC Radio family for the amazing Amsterdam Dance Event which is an electronic music conference and festival held annually in mid-October. 

in December 2020 he joined the amazing team at NDC Radio and now hosts his own weekly show called Groove Nation every Sunday.

The Black Light Disco show hoisted up its clam diggers up to paddle in the blue waters of the myhouseradio.fm airwaves last week; making the most of the sunshine and battering those Monday blues into submission.

It’s the start of the month and that can only mean one thing - it’s the turn of the Pookie Knights boys to massage your ear lobes and give you a big Welsh disco cuddle to kick your week off. 

Fresh from their gig at Good Custard in Manchester last Friday, the boys have pocketed all the knickers thrown at them on stage and donated them to an unnamed charity for sick people (like, really sick people!) The experience doesn’t seem to have traumatised them that much so they’re ready, willing and indeed able to kick out this week’s show live from the BLD Towers Stables (located at the back of the petting zoo). Previews for this week were not available at the time of writing but we’re sure it’ll unhinge the horses but it’ll also bring a smile to your faces.

Classic 70s Soul Mix - Jack Tennis Old School Lounge Mix (FVUK Chillout Guestmix Series)

I've been absorbed in music since the early 80's listening to electro, soul, Chicago house etc. Discovered funk and disco in the early 90's when away at Uni and have spent the past 20 + years buying back into this amazing music genre. Don't get the time to play out much nowadays but I have DJ'ed at Funkademia in Manchester a few times over the past year or two which is always a top night and great place to play! The older I get the more I seem to appreciate not only the music I have collected, but all of the hidden gems I am discovering through edits posted on either Soundcloud or new releases from one of the many talented producers/ editors currently in the Disco Scene. Big fan of labels such as Disco Deviance, Editorial, Midnight Riot, Editors Kutz, Razor N Tape, Whiskey Disco, Chopshop, Hot Digits etc. In my mixes I try to blend the records as subtly as possible and be respectful to what has already been created.
